Jean (Gimalowski) Everett, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Born in Adams Massachusetts on August 2, 1930, she was the daughter of the late John and Mabel Gzimalowski. Jean grew up in Adams Massachusetts and graduated from Adams High school in 1948 as the Class Valedictorian. She then went on to the University of Massachusetts, where she studied English and was a proud sister in the Chi Omega Sorority. After graduating in 1952, Jean moved to New York City and worked as an editor for a radio station in Greenwich Village. She eventually moved to Manchester, Connecticut, where she began her career as an English teacher, working at Bowers School and then transferred to Illing Junior High. In 1959, Jean received her Master of Science from Central Connecticut State University and then spent a memorable summer traveling throughout Europe. Soon after, she met her husband of 59 years, William “Bill” Everett. They married in 1961 and in 1963, they moved into the home they built in Vernon, Connecticut. In 1964, Jean left her teaching career to start a family and was a devoted mother, spending many years raising her children. Jean then went back to teaching English at Illing Junior High School until her retirement in 1996. Jean was a beloved teacher and member of the school community. She was passionate about education and truly loved teaching her students. Jean was a member of the Connecticut Education Association.
Upon retirement, Jean loved spending time at her vacation home in the Adirondacks, bringing the family together for lots of memorable family times hiking, swimming and canoeing. Jean’s retirement days were filled with Zumba and swim classes, book club gatherings, knitting club get-togethers and in the role of “Grammy,” taking care of her adored grandchildren. She was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed getting together with her former colleagues. Jean loved museums and the theater and was also an avid tennis and UCONN Huskies basketball fan.
Jean will always be remembered and cherished by her daughter, Liz and her husband Ed and her son, John and his wife Joanne. She was devoted to her grandchildren, Claudia, Jason, Michael and Will and will be so missed by them.
Jean also leaves behind beloved niece, Sara Moody and nephews, Mark Allen and Jim Allen, as well as her dear cousin and good friend, Pat Gigliotti. Jean was predeceased by her husband, William Everett.
A private family remembrance will be held at a later date, at which time both Jean and Bill’s ashes will be scattered together at their favorite place in the mountains. As Jean was an avid reader and career educator, we ask that contributions be made in Jeans memory to a library of your choosing. The D’Esopo Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. To share a memory of Jean, please visit www.desopofuneralchapel.com
