Dr. Joseph D. Millerick, Sr., of West Hartford and Branford, a well known obstetrician/gynecologist died on October 22, 2010 at the age of 80. He was known for his gentle, respectful manner, his humor and his great capacity as a teacher. He was born in New Britain on April 8, 1930, son of the late Joseph Michael Millerick and Louise Katherine (Skelly) Millerick. He attended Wesleyan University in Middletown , and New York Medical School until he entered the United States Navy, completing his medical training in San Diego, California . During his military service of twenty years, Joseph served as a flight surgeon, a pilot with the Marine Corps, and later as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois. He was honorably discharged in 1975 having attained the rank of Captain. Upon retiring from the Navy, ""Dr. Joe"" then served the greater Hartford community as the Chief of the OB/GYN department at Hartford Hospital until his retirement. Joe was the consummate host, entertaining family and friends with stories, food, and spirit. Most recently, his oasis was his home ""Windrush"" on the Island of Nevis in the Eastern Caribbean which allowed him to play his 3-hole golf course, swim, sail and sit leisurely while watching the sun rise and set – all the things he loved to do. Joe and his first late wife, Judith Kent Walker were blessed by their three children: Janet Stuck and her husband Kevin of West Hartford, David Millerick and his wife Lisa of Southington and Keiko Goulet and her husband Michael of Burlington. Joe's late second wife, Juanita Brown Rentsch blessed him with five step-children, Christi Moraga, Samuel C .Rentsch, Bonnie Blue, Shelley Rentsch, and James R. Rentsch. Joseph has 14 cherished grandchildren that will miss him greatly. Joseph's siblings include Richard Millerick of Arkansas and Marie Millerick Tobin of Bristol. He was predeceased by his brothers John (Jack) Millerick and Robert Millerick. He was blessed in his last years to have caregivers Regina Awansi, Patricia Bonsu, NaNa Boadu and Tina Anim who became great friends while supporting him and his family. The Memorial Service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday (October, 30 2010) at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church Street, Hartford. Burial with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
