

Kevin Mendez, 16, died peacefully Tuesday (April 6, 2010) with his family by his side at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. He is survived by his mother Zenaida Velez, brothers Anthony and Mark Mendez, father Pablo Mendez, grandparents, cousins and his dog, Bolt. Kevin was born and lived his whole life in Hartford. He attended Naylor School and then the Classical Magnet School where he was an 11th grader. He was a passionate sports fan who cheered for the New York Yankees and the Boston Celtics. Kevin loved laughing at his friends, watching them cower during scary movies. Despite his short years on this earth, Kevin spread much joy with his positive attitude and perseverance. Everyone who met Kevin quickly fell in love with his sense of humor and kindness. Although his life was filled with years of medical challenges, Kevin's was unselfish and cared deeply about the welfare and spirit of others. He inspired those around him to be better. The family would like to thank all of his caregivers through the years that helped to comfort him and give him more time to experience the fun things in life. The family will hold calling hours on Saturday (April 10, 2010) from 9:30 - 11 a.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel 277 Folly Brook Blvd. Wethersfield, CT. There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a burial service at Cedar Hill Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Kevin's Fund, C/O Classical Magnet School, 85 Woodland Street, Hartford, CT 06105.
