

Maria Alice do Espirito Santo Lopes Da Costa, 80, of Wethersfield, beloved wife of Dr. José L. Da Costa and mother of Dr. Maria Manuela Da Costa, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Born in Lisbon, Portugal on December 28, 1934, she was the beloved daughter of the late Xysto and Alice Espirito Santo. Mrs. Da Costa attended Colégio Académico and Licéu Dona Felipa de Lancastro and Lisbon Medical School. She met her husband in medical school and moved to the United States in 1957. She was the office manager of her husband’s medical practice for 41 years. She was deeply committed to her faith and was a communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Wethersfield. Maria loved cooking elaborate meals and entertaining. Maria also enjoyed travel and many different cultural events. She also loved cats and owned many over the years. She was a kind and compassionate person who always went above and beyond to comfort patients and families. More than anything, however, Maria devoted her life to taking care of her family and friends and she treasured her special times with them. She will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched. In addition to her loving husband of 58 years and her devoted daughter, she is survived by her sister, Maria Berta Da Silva of Portugal, as well as many other extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Luis Carlos do Espirito Santo.
Funeral services will begin Monday (July 6) at 9 a.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Hwy., Wethersfield. Entombment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Donations in Maria’s memory may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396.
