Rosa Buccheri (née Ierna), 90, passed away peacefully at her home in Hartford on Thursday, October 6, 2022 with her loving husband, Sebastiano Buccheri, by her side. Born on November 11, 1931 in Floridia, Sicily, Rosa was the only daughter of the five children of the late Giuseppe and Sebastiana (Lastrina) Ierna. After marrying Sebastiano in 1948 and giving birth to her daughter, Carmela, the family moved to Melbourne, Australia in 1954 and later welcomed their son, Santo, in 1959. Rosa worked both as a seamstress and on the family farm as she learned English and raised two children. The family moved to Hartford in 1970, where they became part of the vibrant Italian-American community in Hartford’s South End.
In retirement, Rosa remained busy as a talented and passionate gardener, whose roses attracted the admiration of her friends and neighbors both in Hartford and during the summers at their beach house in Old Lyme, Connecticut. A loving grandmother, Rosa helped to care for her grandchildren and, with love and seeming effortlessness, would host memorable holidays with a table full of her homemade meals. A woman of faith, Rosa enjoyed trips to Italy with her husband on pilgrimages to continue her love and devotion to the Catholic Church.
She and Sebastiano shared 74 years of marriage, a partnership that remains the model of love, respect, and care to their entire family. She was predeceased by her son, Dr. Santo Buccheri, in 2020. She is survived and deeply missed by her husband, Sebastiano Buccheri; her daughter, Carmela Carpentieri (née Buccheri) and son-in-law, Bill Carpentieri; her daughter-in-law, Louise Buccheri (née Neptin); her grandchildren, Tina and her husband Jon, Gabriel, Sebastiano, Andreanna and Cristofolo; her great-grandchildren, Anthony and Gianna, and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members in the United States, Italy and Australia.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022 at D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield, CT, 06109. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 53 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106.
