Shirley (Wenning) Steinmetz passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016 surrounded by her loving children. Born in Waterbury, she was the daughter of the late Walter Paul Wenning and Winifred (Dwyer) Wenning. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, George Edward Steinmetz. Shirley was the beloved mother of Susan Maloney and husband Mike of South Yarmouth, MA, John Steinmetz and wife Jane of Cohasset, MA and Christine White and husband Tom of Peterborough, NH and the cherished grandmother of Daniel, Jessica, Elijah, Alexis, Lucille, Christian, Madison and Mackenzie. She is also survived by her sister, Francis Prichard and beloved nephews, nieces and their families, as well as many good friends. Shirley graduated from Crosby High School in Waterbury, University of Connecticut in Storrs and received her Masters in Teaching from Central Connecticut State University. She began her career teaching kindergarten in Waterbury and then went on to start the English as a Second Language program in Wethersfield, where she was named Teacher of the Year. Her political involvement started as President of the Mitchell School PTO. She then became active with local democratic politics and served as the Democratic Town Chairperson for 32 years. She was an active parishioner of Trinity Episcopal Church and organized the Progressive Dinner and collection of items for the Church of the Good Shepherd homeless shelter for many years.
The Funeral Eucharist will be held on Monday (November 28) at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 300 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Burial will follow in Wethersfield Village Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield.
