Bill was a graduate of Hartford Public High School. He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY before joining the U.S. Navy. In 1946, while aboard the USS Ajax stationed at Bikini Atoll, he witnessed the testing of the Atomic Bomb. He returned to CT after being honorably discharged from the Navy and graduated from Trinity College in Hartford with a degree in Chemistry. He spent his career working as a Chemist. Scouting was a large part of Bill’s life. He spoke of those years with the scouts highly and still loved taking rides out on Greenwoods Rd. in Peoples Forest and telling his family about their camping adventures. Bill moved to Enfield in 1957 and was a proud resident for the past 60 years. He was very interested in Enfield’s rich history and spent a lot of time researching Hazardville Powder Company. For many years, Bill was an active member of the Christopher Columbus Philatelic Society. He loved working on projects and he collected stamps, which he arranged into displays on the Columbian Exposition. He was also a world traveler and loved to be outside. He spent a lot of time hiking nature trails and was a proud member of the OFDHWS. Bill was an engaging storyteller and loved to share them with his friends and family. He also loved a good joke and would try to hold back a smile while delivering “the snapper.” He especially enjoyed puns. He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Owens) Mason and husband Joseph (Clark) Mason, III; his son, David Jones and wife Katherine Jones and grandchildren, Peter Owens, Jennifer (Owens) Barry and Jeffrey Barry.
As per Bill’s wishes, funeral services and burial with military honors were private. The D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, Wethersfield was in charge of arrangements. To share a memory of Bill with his family, please visit www.desopo.com.
