Dr. Charles Jacob Huffman, II, 67, of Sutherlin, VA, passed away Jan 6, 2019 at his home. Charles was born in Harrisonburg, VA on November 17, 1951 and was a son of the late Wiley W. and A. Henrietta S. Huffman. He was a Psychology professor at Piedmont Community College in Charlottesville, VA. Since receiving his Doctorate, in addition to Piedmont College, he was professor at Emory and Henry College, Mary Baldwin College, Shenandoah University and James Madison University. Charles graduated from Harrisonburg High School where he was member of the honor club, lettered on the football and track teams, and member of the chess club. He attended Trinity Presbyterian Church as a teenager in Harrisonburg, VA. He attended Old Dominion University & later went on to James Madison University where he received a BS in Psychology. Then to University of NC at Greensboro and received an MA and PhD in Experimental and Cognitive Psychology. Charles leaves behind two children, Tracy Huffman and significant other, William Woolf, of Weyers Cave, VA & Kim Huffman Diehl & spouse, Victoria Phillips, of Watertown, Wisconsin; a granddaughter, Olivia Huffman of Weyers Cave, VA and a grandson, Jacob Trent of Monticello, KY; a special companion of 24 years, Paula Kirtley of Vinton, VA and her children, Amanda and Sam Kirtley, who thought of him as a beloved father figure and role model; four sisters, Alice Pence of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Nancy Early of Staunton, VA, Libbie Armstrong and husband, Wayne Armstrong, of Ruckersville, VA, Susan Huffman-Kirtley of Harrisonburg, VA and husband, Douglas Kirtley, of Grottoes, VA and a number of nieces & nephews. Also surviving are long time, best friends & neighbors, Norman & Betty Alderson and his loyal dog, Penny. He was previously married to Jean Landes of Weyers Cave, VA, mother of his children, who survives. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marcia H. Roadcap and Janet H. Kinkead Stewart, a nephew, Albert Stewart and a great nephew, Robbie Shoemaker, Jr. He was an avid chess player and founded the chess club at Piedmont College. He loved all types of sports, horseback riding, motorcycle riding, swimming, gardening, animals & the outdoors as in hiking, camping & canoeing. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 11:00 am at Lindsey Funeral Home, 982 Keezletown Rd., Weyers Cave, Va. 24486. His body was cremated.
