Irvin was born on December 29, 1943 to the late Fannie Florence Davis and Frazier Davis in Saxe, Virginia.
In the early 1950’s Irvin was baptized at Rocky Branch Baptist Church in Saxe and attended Charlotte County Public Schools. Upon family relocation to Richmond, Virginia, he attended Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School in the class of 1964. After graduation, Irvin enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Vietnam War.
On June 12, 1970, Irvin was united in Holy Matrimony to Curry Elizabeth Jenkins at Mt. Calvary Baptist church in Ivy, Virginia. Irvin and Curry settled in Grottoes, Virginia where they raised their three children: Tonja, Irvin Elgie, and Shawn.
Irvin retired from Tyco (formerly AMP Incorporated) located in Mt. Sidney, Virginia. Prior to Tyco, he had experience in metal and ironworks with companies in Waynesboro, Virginia.
Irvin was talented in music and enjoyed playing the piano, which he taught himself to play as a child. He also taught himself to play guitar and preferred playing the bass guitar. During the 1970s, he played bass guitar as a member of the Virginia Kings who performed and recorded gospel music.
He enjoyed working on cars and developed skills at servicing and repairing a variety of vehicles. In addition, he repaired lawnmowers and practically any other broken machinery that happened to be in his path.
Irvin loved spending time with his grandchildren. He loved playing and joking with them and pulling pranks on other family and friends. He was generous in giving of his time and talents and resources in support of those in need of a helping hand.
Irvin is preceded in death by: wife, Curry Davis; father, Frazier Davis; mother, Fannie Florence Davis; brothers, Otis Davis, Phenel Davis, and William Davis; sisters Catherine Thornton, and Gladys Davis.
Irvin leaves to cherish his memory, daughter, Tonja Davis-Allen (John); son, Irvin Elgie Davis; son, Shawn Davis (Shawnna); sister, Lillie Venable; sister, Edna Shackleford (William); grandchildren, Jordan Allen, Krystjan Allen, Eligah Kiser, Sariyah Davis, and Sebastian Davis; step granddaughter, Ceauna Franklin; sister-in- law, Jessie Jenkins; brother-in law, William Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11 am, Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave with Elder Paulette Davidson officiating. Burial will be at John Wesley Cemetery in Grottoes. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
