Marjorie E. Redfern, age 101, of Whiting, New Jersey passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at home. Marjorie was born in Birmingham England on August 17th 1923, to her parents Elsie and William Ducker. She was the middle child of 3: Evelyn, her older sister, and Bernard, her baby brother.
Marjorie always shared fond memories of her childhood, being involved in church activities, being in the boys and girls club, playing sports like cricket, basketball and rounders and vacationing with her family at the Sea Shore. Life was carefree and happy into her teens, when World War 2 began. Marjorie and her family, dealt with the hardships of being in a war, and from her teenage years until she was 22 years old, her typical childhood was upheaved. Fortunately, she and her family came out of the war unscathed. When the war was over, Marjorie joined the British Red Cross and did hospital work, as well as working a full time bookkeeping job at an office. While working at her job, Marjorie was introduced to a co-worker’s son, the co-worker would eventually become her Mother in law, and the son, her husband Arthur. Marjorie and Arthur were smitten with each other at first sight. Their love grew, and they talked about their future. Arthur was given the opportunity to forge a way to the U.S., and discover the American Dream, he left for the US, to establish himself and attain a job as a civil engineer in NYC, Marjorie soon followed. In May of 1959 she boarded the Queen Mary to set sail for NY to be with the love of her life. She courageously left her family, her friends, and her country behind to start a new adventure in America..
Marjorie and Arthur married July 11 1959 and moved in together in an apartment in Yonkers, where they stayed for nearly a year. After giving birth to their first born, Stephanie, they decided to move to the suburbs, and settled on River Edge NJ to raise their family. In just over 3 years, they had 2 more children, Michael and Jacqueline.
For the next 20 plus years, while raising her children, Marjorie and her family enjoyed many wonderful vacations together, involving return trips to the UK, driving to Canada, and discovering the United States, including a 6 week cross country trek from NJ to California with many National parks and Canyons visited.
Marjorie started working full time when the children were a little older. She worked in the corporate offices for several companies, putting her bookkeeping skills to work. She continued working until shortly before Arthur retired from the Port Authority of New York in 1988.
Marjorie and Arthur decided to build a home in a new Community called Whiting Station, in Manchester Township NJ. They were very excited about their new home and new lifestyle, where they made lots of friends, who shared their many interests. They got involved in social events, being on committees, joined bowling leagues, and traveled on organized trips set up by the community.
During these golden years, marriages were celebrated, and they became grandparents, which was something that brought them the greatest joy.
In between her family time and travel, Marjorie was involved in her church, singing in the choir, performing with the Deerfield songsters, and playing Mahjong with friends.
Marjorie was a strong and resilient lady who persevered after the death of her beloved Arthur in 2004. She continued to immerse herself in her family and friends, enjoying her grandchildren as often as possible.
In recent years, Marjorie endured physical limitations which required the need for full time assistance, she and the family were blessed to find Nina, who was her wonderful and loving care giver.
She is survived by many loving family members: her daughter Stephanie and her husband Chris , son Michael and his wife Rose, and daughter Jacqueline and her husband Michael. Along with grandchildren Daniel, Kevin, Gabriel, Michael, Lauren, Peter, Olivia, Kristin, Laura and her husband Kevin, and great-grandchildren Ava, Ace and Cyrus.
