Charles Ray Mundy, age 85, was born 08/31/1939 in Merkel, Texas, near Abilene. His parents were Ray Wayne Mundy and Lula Raye Hudson Mundy. He graduated from Abilene HS and Hardin Simmons University, in Abilene. While at college he met and married Charlene Preston Mundy in 1960. They were married and in love for nearly 65 years. They have two sons: Randy Wayne Mundy, wife Kay, son Kyle and great granddaughter Gracie of Birmingham, AL, and Mark T. Mundy, wife Allison, son Daniel, daughters Abigail and Sara, of Tomball, TX. Others surviving are his brother Bryan Wayne Mundy, wife Joyce, and their children Mike Mundy and Melissa Thompson of Abilene, TX.
Charles and Charlene’s first trip to Israel was in 1975. On that trip he felt a “God-calling” to take people to the Holy Land, especially those who had never been. Over the years, he led groups and took friends and family 18 times. His everyday job was in banking and computers, but he worked at that just so he could afford to organize and lead trips for other people to experience ”the Beloved Land.”
For the last 40 years, Charles’ unique hobby was stitching counted cross-stitch--creating pictures with impossibly small and difficult stitches. Themes included scripture, nature and, of course, Israel. His last unfinished piece “Lion lying down with the Lamb” referred to the coming “Golden Age.”
Charles was diagnosed with congestive heart failure about 15 years before he had any of the common debilitating symptoms of CHF. Exactly 2 years ago from the day he died, on a trip to Israel, he first had to use a cane. His health deteriorated from that time and his wife Charlene was his constant companion and daily caretaker for the rest of his days.
Charles was such a godly, faithful, loving, and caring man, that he was respected by all who knew him.
A graveside service for Charles will be held Monday, March 31, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Burkburnett Cemetery. A memorial reception will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Houston North West Church in the Commons.
