It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and soulmate to our Mom (Ida Flax). Our parents celebrated 61 yrs of marriage on 12/01/2022 and 3 short days after our Mom passed from an unexpected illness. Our dad was never the same after; he continued to live by himself until he fell and broke his hip while visiting our Mom at the Cemetery a couple days after Christmas of 2024. This past Christmas was a very memorial one for all of us who made attendance; our Dad ate a lot of desserts, drank his Pepsi, visited more than normal and won the last jackpot of “Left, Right, Center”. It was the PERFECT last Christmas spent with him.
In 1960 while my dad was stationed in Germany during the war, he met our mom as she was working in a small café. When our dad returned to the States, he wrote letters to her and eventually she agreed to come to America via ship. They married in 1961 and raised their 5 children in Wichita, KS.
Alfred was an extremely hard worker, working at Boeing for many years through the ups and downs of the Aircraft Industry. He eventually changed careers into Heating/Air with Graf Heating and Air. After years in the HVAC trade, he began working with Midwest Drywall. There he was a working Foreman doing Stucco/Plaster, soon after his son Robert joined him. They both worked side by side on some of the well-known buildings around Wichita (Epic Center, Hyatt, and many others in surrounding States). Alfred eventually retired from Midwest Drywall and was able to stay home and do the things he loved.
He spent a lot of evenings at his grandkids' baseball and basketball games; he didn’t miss them no matter what day or time. He spent his days fixing broken garden hoses, weed eaters, blowers, vacuums, Lawn mowers, and washing his cars. He loved taking his family camping to Marion Reservoir, fishing with his sons whenever he had the chance.
He always wanted to be outside, digging out weeds out of his plush green grass or fiddling around in his garage. He would water daily with his garden hose moving his chair from one area to the next with the hose in one hand and a bottle of Pepsi in the other. If one of us boys needed something fixed, we would drop it off at Dads, so he had something to do, and we knew he would want to fix it for us as it brought him joy. He absolutely loved helping his children out; no matter if it was climbing on roofs to shingle in his 70’s or coming over to help change out a faucet. There wasn’t a thing that he couldn’t fix himself; he wanted it done right and didn’t like someone else working on his belongings. He liked to have his routine… walking Town West mail daily or Watson Park. After mom passed, he was lonely but kept going on a little drive around the neighborhood which was a route he took daily to pass time. His children would come and get him on rotation to take him on rides around town and to see Mom at the cemetery. All he needed was his bottle of Pepsi, some M&Ms in his shirt pocket and he was ready to go wherever you were going to take him.
Alfred is survived by; his daughter Connie, and sons Frank/Robert/Jerome and Anthony; along with 7 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren, and stepbrother George Weber and his wife Charlotte all of Wichita.
Alfred is preceded in death by his loving wife Ida who passed in December 2022; his parents Frank I Flax and Catherine Flax, and his stepmother Clara Weber; sisters Minnie Flax, infant sister Catherine Flax, Rosie Hicks and her husband Walter, Agnes Richmeier and her husband Edwin, Albertina Fehrenbach and her husband Frank, Virginia Weber Robinette and her husband Danny; brothers, Paul Flax and his wife Dolores, Gilbert Flax and his wife Seraphine, and Leonard and his wife Dorothy Weber.
We will always remember his bright smile, the greatest breakfast you could ask for, always being there for us, the hugs and kisses that he waited for before you left, ending with him saying I love you and telling the others that I love them too.
We know he was ready to go and is now at peace; he has so many family members and friends that welcomed him Home with open arms on 06/14/2025 including our wonderful mom.
Everyone loves and misses you. We are all looking forward to seeing you smiling when we meet again. In the meantime, we will continue to take care of each other here like you and mom taught us.
