

Barry Leonard Gilsen, affectionately known by his family and friends as "Gil" or “Sunny,” passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 94. Born on December 5, 1931, in San Francisco, California, Barry was the beloved son of Leonard and Louise (Wilke) Gilsen.
Barry graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, California, in 1949 and continued his education at Chaffey Junior College, where he studied commercial art. In 1950, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country until 1953 as an Airman.
On June 20, 1953, Barry married the love of his life, Vonda Jo Greer, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wichita. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories. Barry retired from the Upland School District after a long and dedicated career in maintenance and locksmithing, officially retiring on his birthday, December 5, 1993.
Barry was a man of many talents and passions. He enjoyed woodworking, cabinet making, and painting—hobbies that reflected his creativity and craftsmanship. His warm personality and generous spirit touched everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Timothy and Dean, and eight grandchildren who brought him immense joy. Barry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vonda; his daughter, Julie Thomas; and his sisters, Joyce Axley and Katherine Gilsen.
Barry’s life was a testament to hard work, devotion, and kindness. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held 2:00PM, Friday, January 16th, 2026, at Lakeview Funeral Home, with inurnment following the service at Lakeview Cemetery, 12100 East 13th Street North, Wichita, Kansas 67206.
