Wittmer Family:
I remember Duane as a Man of God, kind, gentle, caring, always interested in listening to others, and almost shy on the surface, but very firm and strong willed in his daily life. His Evangelism was by his example of living in Christ and faith. His life reflects so many character traits: Faith in God, humility, service, standards and expectations at the highest levels, perseverance, discipline, accountability, achievement, honor, respect, love, and much more.
Most of my contact with Duane was through church and family activities.  He was a dear friend to my father, Merle. They sang in the choir, took rides in the '13 Model T, made apple cider, tuned the church organ...one Saturday tuning session, Duane at the console and Merle in the pipe chamber...Merle called out a rank and note to play. Duane pulled the stop and keyed the note. Merle said 'now give me an octave' meaning the first note and an octave up. Duane stopped playing and sang the exact note an octave up. ( chuckle from the pipe chamber) 'That's very good Duane, but I can't tune to that. Let's try it with the instrument'. They were kind of a mess with their humor. 
Although we will miss his presence, we rejoice that he is homeward bound.

Mary and Phil,
I was sorry to read that your dad died last week. The last I talked with him was a time at Towne East just before he and Norma moved to Colorado. He flagged me down to talk. Thinking of him and you reminds me of all those times at Hyde Park. Please accept my sorrow at your loss and extend my sympathy to Norma.

Thank you for your service & peace be with you all.  Growing up in Wayland, his mother used to write news items for the various local papers! She was most proud of her children and grandchildren, especially when they were visiting and enjoying a Wednesday night band concert! We always touch more lives than we realize.

I was so lucky to have Duane as my Father In Law for those years. He was kind, patient, intelligent, and humble, and wish I would have taken more of his great advice. But mostly I would say thank you...thank you for being such a wonderful Grandfather to my children, I don't even know the half. He had a fun sense of humor, and he had a real knack for figuring stuff out.."Well looky there..." I do not apologize for slipping him a few extra cocktails when I last saw him at Leah's rehearsal dinner. Rest in peace kind sir.
