

Born and raised in an educator's family, Earlene knew the following Kansas communities as her home: Sharon, Clearwater, Claflin, Horton, Concordia, Baldwin City, and Herington. During the summer preceding her senior year at Friends University, her parents moved to Wichita where her father taught a year at Allison Junior High and then became a principal in the Wichita Public Schools and she has made her home in Wichita since that time.
Music, church and Girl Scouts were an important part of her life as she moved from one community to the next. In school bands and orchestra she played viola, cello, flute, French horn, and bell lyre. She also played piano and organ in churches at Concordia and Herington. A musical highlight of her time at Friends University was being a member of the Singing Quakers all four years.
She graduated from Friends University in 1954 as a member of the Order of the Tower. Active in college life, she served as class secretary, Student Council secretary, was a member of Omicron Tau Sigma, Student Christian Association, was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and received the Outstanding Junior Girl Scholarship Award.
Earlene married Benny Mevey, August 18, 1954 in the sanctuary of University Friends Church. Her parents, in 1927, had been the first couple to be married in this building. That fall she began teaching Home Economics at John Marshall Junior High School in Wichita.
After son, Zane was born in 1956 and daughter Vinene in 1958, Earlene devoted her time to being a full-time wife, mother, and homemaker. During the children's elementary, junior high and high school days, the Mevey family purchased a pickup truck and camper and spent summers traveling to all fifty states and all Canadian provinces.
Earlene became a member of University Friends Church in 1943. She has worked in the nursery, taught pre-school, served on the Mission Committee, and has chaired the Friends Women Funeral Dinner Committee— She had also served with her husband on the Visitation Committee.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Benny Mevey; brothers, Dr. Jo Eagle Anderson and Hal Worth Anderson.
Earlene is survived by her son, Zane R. (Myra) Mevey; daughter, Vinene Mevey (Danny) Logan; four grandchildren,Leah Logan, Luke (Ivy) Logan, James Mevey and John (Chelsea) Mevey; four great grandchildren, Alaina Logan, Isaiah Logan, Meadow Mevey and John S. Mevey.
There will be a funeral service Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 2 pm, Northridge Friends Church, 2655 N. Bullinger St, Wichita, Kansas, 67204.
