James “Jim” Myron Swayze, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, and friend, passed away on March 7, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 83. Born on April 21, 1941, in Wichita to James Myron Swayze Sr. and Wilda Rose (Puckett), Jim was the youngest of four children, joyfully described by his older sisters—Betty, Eva Rose, and Ella May—as a lovable “brat” they cherished and doted on.
Growing up, Jim's spirited personality shone brightly. He attended Allison Middle and West High School, where his playful nature was evident—from wrestling matches with his father to his mischievous adventures with neighborhood children. Whether marking off a makeshift boxing ring out of garden hose or teasing his neighbors with disguises, Jim had a knack for creating fun. His love for animals, especially his pet hen, loyal dogs like Freckles, the Fox Terrier who’d climb trees, and his cherished Boston terriers, Tuffy, Nelly, Baxter and Vicky, lest we can’t forget Him selling his family’s vegetable from his wagon throughout the summers left a lasting impression on those around him.
A natural athlete, Jim excelled in masters track and field, often competing in meets out of town, and he found joy in lifting weights in his backyard. These formative years helped shape the determined and driven man he became.
Jim’s professional life began humbly in the grain elevators during high school summers. He later took on roles at Learjet, Boeing, Cudahy Packing, Coleman Cooler Company, Monier & Eagle Roofing Tile and Maize School District where his expertise spanned from purchasing to human resources and plant manager to transportation. His work ethic and dedication were matched only by his love for his family.
It was while working at the Coleman Cooler Company In Downtown Wichita that Jim met the love of his life, Joanne Smith. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, love, and adventure. Even their wedding day was memorable, as Jim’s sister, Ella Mae, drove the couple to the chapel after Jim broke his arm. They shared a full and happy life, raising two daughters, Carrie and Janelle, and leaving an enduring legacy of love.
Proud to serve his country, Jim served in the Marine Corps Reserves, completing boot camp and earning the rank of private before being honorably discharged after his service from 1962 to 1963.
Faith played a central role in Jim's life. Raised in the Methodist tradition, he later explored the many options when attending Coronado Baptist, Palmcroft Baptist church serving as an usher, Metropolitan Southern Baptist, Westlink, and Cross Road serving as a deacon, and Riverlawn churches.
In his downtime, Jim could be found cheering on his favorite teams—WSU and KU basketball, Nebraska football, really, he’d watch any sport on TV. You’d also find him immersed in autobiographies, enjoying Westerns, or participating in a lively bowling game. His joy for life, unwavering devotion to family, and steadfast faith will forever be remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joanne; his daughters, Carrie Beckwith and Janelle (Jason) Sonchik; nephews, Marty (Cindy) Miller, Clifford (Debbie) Miller, and niece, Sherry (Dave) Hilger and countless friends and family who were blessed by his presence.
Those who’ve gone before include: his parents, James and Wilda; his sisters, Betty Woodward, Eva Rose Newton, and Ella Mae Miller; and nephew, Eddie Goodwin.
