Joseph "Joe" Bunk

Joseph F. Bunk, age 67, of Wichita, KS passed away February 28, 2015. He was born July 14, 1947 in Great Bend, KS to Maurice and Mary (Kaechele) Bunk of Hoisington, KS. Preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Donna, of 40 years, sister Barbara Lucas and husband Bill of Lexington, MA, nephew Chris Lucas and wife Claudia of Edinburgh, Scotland, and niece Ashley Lucas of Boston, MA. In 1965, Joe graduated from Hoisington High School. After serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War, he attended Kansas State University and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Accounting. In 1974, Joe and Donna married and moved to Wichita. Joe’s career began as a staff accountant and he later became a partner with Elmer Fox & Co (Grant Thornton). In 1989, Joe established his own accounting practice. Through his words and actions, Joe will be remembered for his sense of humor, loyalty, generosity and high standard of ethics. Everyone who knew Joe benefitted from these traits. Joe was always “up for having a good time” and always had a smile on his face. In a letter of recommendation, a superior officer in the U.S. Army wrote, “SP5 Bunk is respected by all, superiors and subordinates alike, for his ability to get along well with others. I know of none that he has met that is not now a friend of his. I would gladly work with SP5 Bunk at any time and in any place.” For relaxation, Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, sporting clay shooting, golfing, traveling, as well as cooking and sharing his wine collection with friends. He loved to visit with people and was always interested in learning about others rather than talking of his own accomplishments. For many years, Joe served on executive boards for multiple not-for-profit organizations. He considered serving on these boards an honorable mission and truly enjoyed his relationship with everyone who shared the same interest in Rainbows United, Quivira Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the Wichita Art Museum. He also volunteered a short time with the Crime Commission, and Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas. For many years, Joe was also involved with the College of Business Administration Advisory Board of Kansas State University. Social organizations Joe was a longtime member of, and held offices in, were Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and the Wine & Food Society of Wichita. Joe brought us joy; we loved him well. A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held at the Wichita Art Museum, 1400 W Museum Blvd., Tuesday, March 17 at 5:00. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be sent to Cancer Society of America (Cancer Research), 330 S. Main #100, Wichita, KS 67202, or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S Market St., Wichita, KS 67202 or any of the not-for-profit organizations Joe so proudly served.
