La Verne H. Johnson Jr. was born in Pratt, Kansas to La Verne H. Johnson, Sr. and Almetris L. Johnson on July 3, 1950. La Verne was called “Chuckie” by family and friends alike. How this nickname started is a mystery. The family moved to California in the mid 50’s, Chuckie returned to Wichita in his early 20’s where he married Joyce Ann Oliver had one child, La Verne H. Johnson, III. Chuckie was in the United States Army and a retired Boeing employee.
Chuckie loved baseball. He played on Little and Senior League teams as a youth, continuing to play on various teams in the Wichita area as an adult. He enjoyed fishing with his buddies and talking about the “one that got away” He had a sense of humor and obtained his news, the old fashion way, by reading-the newspaper. He was in a constant struggle with modern technology, especially his Smart Phone.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Johnson and his father, La Verne H. Johnson, Sr., step-son, Charlie Ray Harris. He is survived by his son, La Verne H. Johnson, III (Celese), step-daughter, Stafon Bishop; mother, Almetris Johnson; siblings, Deborah Pettigrew, Gregory L. Johnson, La Tonya (Robert) Sturgis; and Kevin B. Johnson: grandchild, Jalen Johnson, cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 3:30pm, Friday, June 7, 2019 at Resthaven Mortuary with a visitation 1 hour prior to service. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, 236 S. Topeka, Wichita, KS 67202.
