In Memory of Maurice "Moe" Hazen, July 1, 1932 to November 8, 2016 Maurice Hazen, age 84, passed away peacefully in the mid morning hours on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, following a progressing illness with Alzheimer's. Moe was born in Belle Plaine, Kansas, the eldest son of Maurice and Juanita Hazen. The family moved to Wellington, KS, when he was a young boy and later to Wichita when Moe was a teen, where he graduated from East High School. Maurice met the love of his life, Betty Lou Shearhod while attending Sunday School at Westminster Presbyterian Church; later marrying in January of 1952. Moe proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged December 8, 1954. He and his wife began their family and raised three children, Lee Hazen of Andover, Pam Whaley (Hazen) of Wichita, and John (Trish) Hazen of Derby. During his youth, Maurice threw papers while living in Wellington and later to supplement his income when first moving to Haysville; this is where Moe got to know all of his community members in Haysville. After returning from the Korean War in December of 1954, he worked on the Railroad. Moe later worked in the aircraft industry; retiring from Boeing Aircraft with a golden handshake, as a Tool Grinder. Maurice moved his family to Haysville, KS in 1955 and remained a lifelong resident of the community. Maurice was a founding member of St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Haysville and an active member throughout his lifetime. Maurice shared his faith with everyone he met; always smiling broadly when sharing his love of the Lord with others. Throughout his life he also enjoyed singing in the church choir. Maurice was devoted family man, celebrating 54 years of marriage with Betty Lou, until she went on to be with the Lord in May of 2006. Moe spent family time involved in his children's lives; camping, fishing, playing family games and staying active in church activities and the community. Moe is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Juanita Hazen, brother Cecil Hazen, sister Juanita Hazen, brother Reverend Robert C. Hazen, and wife Betty Lou Hazen. Maurice will be remembered by all who knew him for his infectious smile, love of conversation, and genuineness of spirit. Moe would often pause to make a new friend by starting with a simple conversation, building memories and leaving a person feeling they had known him their whole life. Although Alzheimer's often stole pieces of his memory in his later years, Moe could often recall people or events from the past and leave one laughing when reminiscing upon a funny story experienced in past days. Moe will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be from 5p.m. - 7p.m. Friday, November 11, 2016, and from 1p.m. to 2p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016, with funeral service following at 2p.m. Burial with military honors will follow, with all services taking place at Lakeview Funeral Home and Gardens. Family and church invite you to join them at 5p.m. for a reception dinner at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 1200 W. Grand, Haysville.
