Phyllis spent all of her childhood growing up in rural China and spent much of her time attending a Christian missionary school. After the Chinese Revolution, she left China for Hong Kong where she attended a Catholic high school. Subsequently, she migrated to Boston, Massachusetts where she added the Trade School for Girls and worked for several years as a seamstress in a local department store.
Phyllis later met David Y Wong from Wichita, Kansas who also grew up in China. They were married July 3, 1960. Their first son, John David, was born in 1962 and their second son, Ronnie Dean, was born in 1969.
Phyllis spent much of her working career as a seamstress for Henry's clothing store. After her retirement, she worked as a lunchroom attendant at the Independent School. She was one of the founding members of St. Luke Presbyterian Church in South Wichita, which she attended regularly until it disbanded.
One of Phyllis's proudest accomplishments was tending to her vegetable garden, which she maintained meticulously for many years. She was also very fond of making cakes and cookies and sharing them with friends and acquaintances. Phyllis also volunteered much of her time at Starkey, where her younger son was a client.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Way You and Tone Oy Jong and husband, David Y Wong.
Phyllis is survived by her sons, John Wong and Ronnie Wong; brother, Kenneth Jong; sisters, Patricia Lantz and Palm Ng; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
Funeral service for Phyllis will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 30, 2023, with visitation one hour prior, at Lakeview Funeral Home. Entombment will follow the service, at Lakeview in the Mausoleum, 12100 East 13th Street North, Wichita, Kansas, 67207.
