Roy Merritt

Roy attended Caldwell High School, Caldwell, KS, then went on and obtained his electrician's certificate (IBEW). His career was spent as a master electrician in the Wichita area. Beginning with residential and moving up to forman overseeing huge commercial contracts such as Towne East Mall.

Roy was united in marriage to Marilyn Fay Counsell on March 24, 1962, and to this union two children were born, Tanya Merritt and Tamara James.

To say Roy Merritt was mechanically inclined would be an understatement.

Roy enjoyed building different projects for family, but his passion was re-storing antique automobiles in his decked-out garage. He continually searched for antique car bodies or parts (especially '34 Fords) and over time that collection of pieces and metal would be crafted into a gleaming classic car. His genius always shown through in this work.

In October 2023, the 17th Annual GEEZER GATHERING was held, Roy proudly began this tradition nearly 20 years ago in his own yard which then expanded to a larger downtown venue where nearly 200 car lovers and their antique cars would meet for this legendary event. If you were an old car guy, it was the do not miss event of the year.

Roy's family always knew they could count on him through any circumstance and will miss him greatly.

He is preceded in death by: his parents; and his brother-in-law, Ervin Urban.

He is survived by: his wife, Marilyn; his two daughters, Tanya & Tamara; his grandchildren, Tara James and Sean James; his four great-grandchildren; his brothers, Bob (Wynell) Merritt, Max (Lynn) Merritt; and his sisters, Oraleen Urban, and Ruth (George) Sanford.

Visitation will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Resthaven Mortuary.

Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, Kansas, with Chaplain Chris McNiel officiating. Cremation will follow the services at a later date.
