As Mike said, it has been a year but seems like yesterday.  Like your family, I miss my dear friend but your memory will live forever with us.  Goodbye again and give Glen and Dave a hug for me.

Mom it has been a year but it still seems like yesterday.  I can only imange the joy you have being in the presence of our Savior.  I miss you but know I will see you again.

I am just this minute hearing about Shirley's going home. I have not seen Shirley in a very long time, but spent almost 3 years looking at her as a mother figure to me because I had lost mine at the age of 14 and I spent a lot of time in Shirley's life. She was such a special woman and I enjoyed my time with her and regret not staying in touch with her over these last 30+ years. My thoughts and prayers go out to Mike, Linda and dear Jim. My heart aches for your loss, but rejoice that she is no longer suffering and is in the arms of Jesus. Blessings to all the family.

She had an amazing gift to make anyones life she touched better. She embodied pure joy and selflessness. I will forever remember her hugs and how they felt just like my great grams and that helped keep her memory alive. Her loss will be felt by many. So many of my favorite memories come from her beautiful Christmas Eve gatherings, she had a way of spreading the true meaning of the holiday. I can not express how much you will be missed.

I would like to send my condolences to the family of Shirley, I had the pleasure of not only doing her hair, but also realizing how much she loved her family and friends around her . Shirley was a very kind hearted person and I am glad to have known her.

Each time I would visit, I would wake up to the smell of coffee. We would sit at the table and talk. That was our special time together.
Sour dough bread always makes me think of her. She always had it at her house and would make toast in the morning with lots of butter. I also love her chocolate chips cookies. No matter what I try, I can never make them taste just like hers. We always fought over them at Thanksgiving. One of my funniest memories was when she and Inga came down for the Tour de Cure. For some reason Inga put her foot up on the chair and started shaking and slapping her butt. Then she said hey grandma, can you do this?â€ Grandma said â€œwell yeahâ€ then stuck her foot on the chair, shaking and slapping her butt. It was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen her do.

My favorite memories of Shirley and Dave are the pool parties the card games and family picnics in the back yard. Their motto was if your going to do something do it right I really loved those times.

I could write a book of memories with my sis for the past 20 years Shirley become my best friend my wife's sister and my children's grandmother I can't put into words how much I will miss her. Sitting on the beach watching the sunrise drinking our coffee and my sis pointing out all the beauty in front of us. She taught me to stop and smell roses and oh look bubba how pretty that little rock or flower is that most of us would have just walked by with out a second look. I watched in amazement how she touched total strangers lives with in minutes as she spoke in her soft sweet voice and twinkling blue eyes and a smile that invited them to her ,she would hold their hand and say the right thing and they would leave uplifted and wondering was I touched by a Angel, I have seen this many times. I have been so blessed to have my sis to be her bubba thank you God she is home.

I don't think I'll be able to come up with just "a" memory. After all, we are talking about Shirley. She has vacationed with us for over 20 years. I'll never forget when she came to stay with us after David Dean passed. We decided we'd do AZ. Dave took long weekends for 6weeks. We camped all over the state. The Phoenix Suns were in the playoffs and we were camping in the bottom of Oak Creek Canyon with little radio service. She got the biggest kick out of watching us trying to listen to the game.

Then there was the trip when she found this field of sunflowers. She drug the girls down to take pictures with her in those flowers.

Our first trip to Disneyland was hilarious. Dave hurt his back the first day of a very long trip. He laid in the suburban while us girls spent 4 hours touring The Hurst Castle. We then proceeded up the California coast where we encountered a waitress wilder than a tasmanian devil. Then we spent the night in this"motel" The beds were so uneven you could bearly stay on them. Oh, I almost forgot, the 3 inch cotton tick mattress on the rusty springs and the door that you could have thrown a cat through. To Shirley, it was just another story to add to the rest of her travels. Dave always said, "only the best for his sis!"

I would be remiss if I didn't have a beach memory. All we had to do was mention Mexico and she had an airline ticket. We shelled, ate lots of seafood, drank, shelled, had coffee time, shopped, enjoyed incredible sunrises and sunsets, and looked for shells. 

I guess by now you've figured out my favorite memory of my big sis. It was just being with her.   Penny

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family". Shirley was the type of person who you just felt blessed to know. She made you feel like family whether you were or not. She will always be in my heart. I feel blessed to have been in her life. Love you Shirley! Please give Grandma a big hug up there in heaven. God just received two of the most amazing angels I've ever met!

I didn't know your mom personally, but I am a Christian sister and know her in the spirit.  I wish I had known her as I have also suffered a great loss in my life and would have liked to have a friend like her to talk to.  I am so glad that she is now home and in heaven.  I am so glad that you have such good memories of your time with her.  
When my time comes, I will look for her for all eternity and rejoice in heaven's beauty.  Blessed are those who sleep in the lord.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Shirley's family during this time of loss. We've never met a more welcoming and warm hearted woman such as Shirley.  Since moving next door to her she opened her home and her heart to me and my family.  My children and the rest of us adored her, she will be missed.

I have had allot of time to think the last couple weeks and  I will miss my time alone with her and a cup of coffee early in the morning most of all.  It was special Sitting and talking or just being together.  I will always remember her smile and how she seemed to stand a little taller when she introduced me to some one.  I will always remember her hands.  At times they were rough from hard work and at times soft and gentle.   I. Held them when we would pray together or just walking together.  It is amazing that I can still see her loving eyes, gentle smile and the touch of her hand on my face as she said I love you.  I am going to miss you deeply mom but I know I will see you again one day.  I love you.

It is so hard to put in a few words about how much I will miss Shirley. She was my inspiration and the greatest mother-in-law in the world. She was not my Mom but she made me feel like I was her son. She was always there for Linda and I, and would do anything to help us.She would help us with money when we were young and newly married. There wasn't any thing she wouldn't do for us. She would help Linda decorate our house, and even a month ago when she wasn't feeling well she would still come over to help decorate. We loved to take her on trips with us. We have been to a lot of fun places, the Bahama's,Vegas, Florida, Dallas, Kansas City. I would joke with her and call her my low maintenance travel companion. Christmas was so special to her, our daughter Inga mentioned that she has only known spending Christmas at grandma's house. It will be hard celebrating it some where else, but that is what Shirley would expect us to do. Every Christmas she would go to great extremes to find and give me a fishing Santa figurine and I was always so thrilled to wait to see the one for that year, I will miss that. She was the greatest Mom, the greatest Mother-In-Law and greatest grandma.We couldn't have found a better one. She will always be in my heart because no matter where I look I will be reminded of her. My mother was God's Blessing to me.She called me her dresser drawer baby. The things that stay with me today are the spiral notebooks.You see my mother was always a planner with spiral notebook in hand as we would begin to plan a family party or holiday event. It just was not the planning the family party but the time we spent together that matter. It could be just a day out together.
Then a day or two latter I would get a Thank You Card in the mail telling me just how much she loved our time together on that day. I have received a life time of these cards. In her last day with me she told me she was losing our time together. I picked her up and hug her so tight trying not to lose that time together.
So this is my Thank You Card to my mother for always being there for me. The unconditional Love you always gave me will always be in my heart. Love and Hugs Linda. She would always sign her cards Love and Hugs Mother. I will miss you Mom.

To the family of Dave and Shirley, Our familes attended First Bible together many, many years ago and your mom and dad are part of special memories I have of growing up at First Bible.  

Your momma and daddy are two people I will always remember as wearing smiles constantly, your momma with her precious eyes and incredible craftsmanship through flowers. We always knew Ms. Shirley would create something gorgeous.  Your daddy will always be remembered as energetic and a bit mischievious twinkle in his eyes.

I have prayed that the Lord will bless you with sweet and precious memories of both your parents and that those memories will bless your hearts in the days and weeks to come.

As my momma and her momma have always said, when one of our loved ones goes home before us, Heaven has just become that much sweeter.  It most certainly has once again.

Being a neighbor of Shirley's for 11 years, I have many wonderful memories from our friendship!  She was the best neighbor with watching out for each other and yet not getting into each other's business.  She was always caring and respectful. 

Shirley always seemed to have a sense of when I needed encouragement.  That's when I would find some of her delicious baked treats on my doorstep with a wonderful hand written note.  Her wisdom and kindness had a way of bringing the right perspective back into any situation.  I felt her prayers...

We are never ready to loose a parent because they are such a great part of our lives. Just know that our prayers are with you, her children. She is cradled in the arms of Jesus.

My favorite thing about your Mom is her hugs! For that moment she made you feel loved, safe and appreciated and she made you feel like your hug meant as much to her as hers did to you. 

And of course if you have been blessed enough to spend Christmas with Shirley than you are blessed to have cherished memories of the beauty and magic of Christmas.

Sorry don't want to be long winded but one more special memory to share...she would send you by MAIL (not tweet, texts or email) a card or note to let you know she was thinking of you for specials events in your life like the birth of a child or grandchild or the tough times like the loss of a loved one or when your husband was deployed and you never felt so alone and scared in your life. However, the best ones are the ones that arrived for no reason at all other than to say she was thinking of you and loved you!

She is loved so much and no doubt was an Angel here on earth to everyone that met her, but soon will be a Forever Angel to all of us. 

If you all need anything like another Peanut Butter Cake :)...I am just a text or call away.

I have so many wonderful memories...but I am going to pick one of the more recent ones because it involves my whole family-
When Aunt Shirley was here in June, Billy and I decided to go up to Lakeside so that we would be able to see her before she went back to Wichita (looking back I think that was God talking to me). We got up Saturday morning and Aunt Shirley went on a walk with Easton and I to find the big boys. We didn't talk about much but just enjoyed each others company. After our walk we went to the go-carts and she sat and watched us go around the track smiling and waving at the boys everytime they went around. Getting a kick out of the boys as they would yell "look at me Aunt Shirley". We then continued our full day of entertaining by going to the movie. We went and watched How To Train Your Dragon 2. I loved sitting next to her as she would grab my hand and say this is fun, I love listening to the boys, thank you for bringing me. She had had so much fun with my family but my family was lucky enough to get to spend that last time with her. My Aunt and I always had the best relationship and conversations.... she could truly find the good out of everything. She has been a part of every accomplishment I have ever had. I am lucky that even in my boys short amount of time  on earth that they were blessed to know their great Aunt Shirley and that they have had the experience to be loved by her! I am going to miss her so much...she was so much more than an Aunt... she was my friend, my fill in Grandma, my shoulder when I needed to cry, my ear when I needed a person to listen, my biggest cheerleader! I love you Aunt Shirley and I know that when the sun is shining through the clouds it is you breaking it apart to see me. When I see the flowers blooming and smell them I will think of you, I will be the person that gives that NOBODY an ear to listen. Aunt Shirley I will try to be the person you were to all walks of life...I am only sad that my boys will not get to live the life I did with you!
Sorry..I hope this is what you wanted. Thinking of you guys. I know how proud she was of all of you...you could see how she would light up when talked about all of you. Please give her a kiss and hug for me and tell her that I love her!

To my second family I send my love and condolences.  Shirley and I have enjoyed a beautiful friendship over the past 50 years.(50 - my goodness!) She and Dave were such wonderful friends for my parents and shared their love and showered care and friendship with them.  My husband Glen and I shared that relationship as well. I have lots of wonderful memories of the times we spent together - from the infamous Pitch Tournaments, family picnics, short road trips, long weekend trips to, of course, baseball, and spending Christmas Eve with our families together.  Who knew this last year would be the last one?  Well, the "Circle" will be unbroken as our two families will continue to be "family".  Love you all, and will miss Shirley so very much.

Walking mom home.

I have watched my mother over the last two weeks go from a woman full of life to a shell of the human body.  You see she has been riddled with a aggressive cancer that is beyond what we could treat.

This has been a very hard time for my family watching this happen.  Most of  them got to visit with her while she was still coherent and could somewhat communicate with them.  She knew who they were and loved on them even in her weakened state.  We had so many people come by and I watch my mom talk with them and in her own gentle way tell them goodby and that when she was know longer able to walk that Jesus would carry her.  She had a unique way of making everybody she met fill special with her unconditional love and acceptance.

I have also got to witness the strength of my sister Linda.  Her and Nick just laid to rest Marie (Nicks mother) the week before and now we are here with our mother.  She is amazing as she goes about taking care of mom, all of us and working their business.   She scurries around juggling things and reminds me of mom in so many ways.  Beautiful, hard working and has moms love for family and dads giving heart.  

I have also seen something in my brother Jim that doesn't surprise me but i haven't been around to witness.  I have seen a Tender Warrior.  A man so strong and large as life itself have such an extreme love for our mother.  I have witnessed this in his face and actions as he has held her, caressed her hand and gently whispered I Love You in her ear.

This has given me a peace that all of us are going to be fine because we know that Jesus is waiting and we will join her one day.  Like my wife said the heavens are rejoicing because a child is coming home.   Those who have went before us are dancing, and singing in anticipation of her arrival.

August 6th 2014
Last night we finished walking my mom home.  She was dressed in a beautiful purple night gown.   As we held her hands and told her that we loved her, one final tear came to her eye as she took her final breath here on earth.  What a honor to have been able to put her hand in the hand of Christ and see her face turn from one of struggle to one of instant peace with such a beautiful smile.  I will miss her for a time but then I will see her again.
