Stephen A. Lutkie, 66, retired Teamster Local 795 truck driver, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2014. Steve was born 1948 in Ashland, WI. In the 50’s the family moved to Wichita. He attended St. Joseph and Christ the King schools before graduating from Bishop Carroll High School. Steve was a very proud member of the teamsters union. Steve never married nor had children. Racing was his life. In the late 60’s Steve began racing. In the 70’s his racing career was at its peak. He had moved up to ASA and was competing with the likes of Mark Martin and Dick Trickle. This involved a lot of travel so in the 80’s when his parents became ill he left his dreams and moved back to Kansas to care for them. After his retirement from driving he became a mentor to his great nephews James, Dylan and Dustin. He was very proud of them for carrying on the “Lutkie Racing” family tradition. In 2012 he was inducted into the 81 Speedway Hall of Fame. Live life like you race, with determination, dedication, compassion and style. Steve was a class act.
