Vourchheang Tong, 93, of Wichita, Kansas passed away peacefully on March 1, 2016. She was surrounded by loved ones. “Grandma Toy” was born on October 5, 1922 in the Cambodian Province of Kampong Speu, District of Kong Pisei, in the tiny farming village of Beuong Chhram. She is the daughter of Tong Nou and Nay Hor. She married Kim Toy and together they had 10 children (5 boys and 5 girls). Her life was forever scarred by the Khmer Rouge, who would rob her of many friends and family, including her husband and 3 sons. In a testament to her strength and resolve, she gathered her remaining children and fled. They wandered from Thailand to the Philippines, eventually finding refuge in the United States. In 1981 she arrived in Wichita, Kansas. There she would spend the rest of her life in the comforts of a warm home surrounded by an ever growing family. Grandma Toy always enjoyed a good game of cards. In the summer months she would spend evenings on long walks with the family. She is preceded in death by her husband Kim Toy and 3 sons (Khunchang Toy, Siemtong Toy, and Hautry Toy). She is survived by 2 sons (Khuntray Toy and Chiek Toy), 5 daughters (Sieu Cheng, Sokhuy Toy, Sokkeng Toy, Thorly Toy, and Victoria Bakly), 17 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. She is loved and missed by many more. Funeral service will be held at Lakeview Chapel on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 2pm. Prior to the service, visitation with family will be held beginning at 1pm.
