William (Bill) Robert Gramke, 88, departed this world in the comfort of his home on March 11, 2024. Born on May 4, 1935, to William and Carrie Gramke in Emporia, Kansas, Bill grew up on a farm in the serene Flint Hills near Olpe. He was the fifth child among seven siblings.
After graduating from Emporia High School, Bill ventured to Wichita, where he found not only an education at Wichita Technical College but also the love of his life, Dixie. Their union, sealed on August 10, 1957, marked the beginning of a lifelong journey together. Bill’s dedication to service led him to the United States Air Force, stationed at Fritsch-Kaserne in Darmstadt, West Germany, where he served with honor as part of the USAF Security Service. He honored his Top-Secret security clearance for decades until his work was declassified and he was able to acknowledge the Cold War surveillance activity that was critical to America’s sovereignty.
Following his Air Force service, Bill embarked on a fulfilling career with Honeywell (formerly Sperry Flight Systems) as an Avionics Repair Technician. Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a guiding force in the lives of his three sons, Chip, Korby, and Jason, instilling in them the values of faith, family, and service. His impact extended far beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of those he encountered through his church, work, and the world.
Known for his genuine spirit and practical wisdom, Bill was never one to speak ill of others and consistently sought the best in people. While not the life of the party, his gentle and authentic nature drew people to him. Bill’s ability to simplify the complex and lead by example resonates in the legacy of excellence and service he leaves behind. His memory will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dixie, sisters Shirley Hensley and Barbara Wheeler, sons Chip (Nancy), Korby (Deanna), and Jason (Connie). Grandchildren Andrea (Chris) Porter, Audra (Juan) Ramirez, Ashlie Hartfield, Aaron Gramke, Shawna (Rob) Taylor, Justin Mead, Zacharie (Karla) Gramke, Zack (Heidy) Watkins, Jake (Izabella) Gramke, Franki (Spencer) Teegarden, and Luke Gramke. Great grandchildren Alyssa, Amanda, Aleigha, Tanner, Kael, Brayden, Kinley, Kaylie, Kelsie, Kyle, Chris, Hudson, Karlie, Nellie, Noah, Sterling, Jace and four more on the way.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2024, with the Funeral Service following at 1:00 PM, all at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita. Interment will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, in the Garden of Prayer.
