Julia “Jean” Lane, aged 90, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on February 7, 2017. She was a resident of Fairwinds Assisted Living in Spokane for six years where she enjoyed many outings, including many plays and visits to various locations.
Jean was born June 10, 1926, in the Wilbur Johnston Hospital to Arthur and Nellie Andersen. She graduated from Wilbur High School in 1944 and later attended Kinman Business University of Spokane. She married Jim Lane August 24, 1945, while he was on leave from the service following the conclusion of the European war. He was expecting to be sent to the Pacific Theatre, but was discharged a few months following their wedding because the war had ended.
In the late 1940’s, the Lane’s purchased the Signal Service Station where the Wheatland Bank parking lot is now located. Their son Mike was born in 1946 and daughter Josie, four years later. After selling the station, the family moved to a dairy farm at Mica, Washington, where they lived for a short time. They then moved to Wilbur where they farmed and Jim worked at the local post office.
Of Danish ancestry, Jean said her grandparents moved to Wilbur when her father was a child (her mother was a Mearns). A housewife until 1965, Jean then went to work, holding several different positions in Wilbur. These included working at McGrath’s Drug Store where she made many sodas for the local kids. She also worked for Dr. Howard Shane, was a legal secretary for Ed Dawson and Phil Borst for 7 years, and later retired from Security Pacific Bank, which had gone through many name changes, but is now Key Bank.
Jim retired from the post office in 1984 and later they bought a house in town.
Jean loved the outdoors and always had a garden and lots of flowers. She also loved to travel, taking her grandchildren on special trips. Best of all she love spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1991, her parents, Arthur & Nellie Andersen, sisters Helen McDonald, Anna Mae Hastings, and Joyce Gardner. She is survived by son Mike (Debby) Lane, daughter Josie Kayler, grandchildren Jamie (Jason) Bray, Ethan Kayler, Karly (Zach) Ramsey, great grandchildren Garrett, Ryleigh, Laney Bray and Gabby Kayler and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wilbur Presbyterian Church. There will be a graveside service at Wilbur Cemetery. If you wish to make donations, please donate to the Wilbur Swimming Pool fund or to the Golden Rule Child Care. Please visit our website to sign the online guestbook at www.stratefuneralhome.com.
