

Barbara was born to General Lutz Wahl, (The Adjutant General, U.S. Army, in the 1920’s) and Fenella Hero Wahl on June 24, 1927. She was raised in Washington, D.C. and went to Holden Arms School in D.C. and the Gardener School in New York City.
Barbara married Austin L. Roberts, Jr in 1945 and they had 4 children, Austin L. Roberts, III (deceased), F. Clare Roberts, Gretchen R. Thompson, and Barbara R. McCarthy (Harry). She also has 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
While raising the girls, Barbara served as a Girl Scout Leader, P.T.A. Book Committee Chairwoman, and a Bruton Parish Church Sunday School teacher, among other things.
In earlier years, Barbara enjoyed arts and crafts projects, bowling, golf, swimming and travel. When she became an empty nester, she worked for a decade as an interior design specialist at Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C. When her husband retired, they took up traveling and circumvented the world twice; once south of the equator and once north of the equator; and traveled to all the continents except Antarctica.
Barbara lived a full life.
