

David was born on November 16, 1957 in Howard Creek Township, NC to Gladys Rudisill Workman and Robert Clarence Workman. Following the death of his parents, his beloved aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Ervin Carpenter lovingly welcomed him into their home. He is preceded in death by all four of his parents, his sister Judy Nelson and his beloved GTO Judge.
He is survived by his brother, Dennis Workman and his wife Kay Workman and their son David. He is also survived by his daughter, Kristina Workman and her husband Leeman Boggess; daughter, Cindy Smith and her husband William Smith; and six grandchildren, Olivia Boggess (partner Gabe Delgado), Jacob Boggess, Hayden Wilson, Brendan Smith, Paige Trainum and Brittany Favret.
After graduating from West Lincolnton Senior High School, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp as a Mortar Man and achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. He then returned to N.C. where he graduated Catawba Valley Technical College. He worked as an Electrician at the Newport News Shipyard for over 20 years before moving on due to health complications. He felt strongly that work gives us purpose and fellowship and enjoyed helping others for over another decade at Walmart.
Over the years he very much enjoyed continuing education, auditing classes at William and Mary and taking classes at Virginia Peninsula Community College and contributing to the community with volunteer work at NASA, Toys for Tots, and Meals on Wheels. He attended Messiah Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church in Williamsburg.
Living a life defined by kindness, generosity and a deep love for the people around him; in his later years he found joy purchasing and distributing chocolates to the people he encountered. Coming to be known at as the “Candy Man” in the doctors’ offices, hospitals and establishments he frequented. A lifelong football fan, he found a great deal of joy in both live football games and fantasy football.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 PM on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg, VA. He will be laid to rest at Bethel United Cemetery in Vale, NC. A graveside ceremony will follow on Tuesday, March 17th at 1:00 PM.
