Donald Banks Ogburn, 85, passed away at his home in Williamsburg, Virginia on October 8, 2023. Donald was a life-long resident of the Peninsula and a 1956 graduate of Hampton High School. Donald married his high school sweetheart, Judith Ann Askew, and together they made a home and family first in Newport News and later in Williamsburg. Donald took a summer job at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1956 as an X32 sheet metal worker and retired in 1999 as an M32 General Forman, having turned a summer job into a 43-year career.
Donald was a craftsman. An expert woodworker, he created plaques, awards, and mementos for NNS, completed the detail carpentry in the homes he and Judy lived in, and made many of the fixtures that furnished their homes. He and Judy created, cultivated, and maintained a sprawling floral garden in the backyard of their Williamsburg home that rivaled any professional botanical garden. Donald was also an avid golfer travelling and playing courses all across Virginia over the course of nearly four decades. Donald also possessed a quick wit and his sarcasm was a frequent source of laughter for the family (at least when you weren’t the target of the joke). In recent years, one of his greatest joys was cruising in his beloved Ford Mustang.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Judith and daughter, Cheryl. He is survived by his son, Keith; daughters, Michele and Julie; grandchildren, Aharon, Kristina, Christopher, Tucker, Taylor, Julianne, Shae, and Megan; and great-grandchildren, Harlee, Brayden, Cadence, Aiden, Madie, Aiden, Baylee, and Jaelynn.
