Boots Johnson, (Elsie Gamble Johnson), Mother and Teacher. Boots, a former teacher and self-described civil rights advocate and environmentalist, died Sunday, June 24, 2018 age 84 of natural causes surrounded by the love of family and friends. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, teacher, wife, sister and friend. An accomplished and independent mind, she lived life to the fullest and on her terms. Our hearts are full and we will honor our mother’s legacy by being the children and grandchildren she wanted us to be.
A resident of Williamsburg for over 55 years, she was predeceased by her loving husband and soul mate, Don Johnson; brother, Oscar Gamble, Jr.; and sister, Doris Herring. She leaves behind her “baby” sister, Margie Bullock of Bessemer, Alabama; son, Glenn Mitchell and his wife Barbara; and beloved grandsons; Sean, Brett and Connor all of Richmond, Virginia; daughter, Sondra Bennett and her husband Michael; and Jax, her canine companion.
Anyone who knew Boots knew she was passionate about living and the art of discovery. She always said if you stop learning you might as well die. Over the course of her lifetime she was involved in the League of Women Voters, focusing on Civil Rights and educational concerns as well as her involvement with Friends of Powhatan Creek, and her commitment to the protection of the watershed. Boots (Mom) had a great appreciation for music, art, tennis and nature which she passed on to her family. Boots enjoyed interacting with people the most. Some of her fondest memories, up until her death, were the students she taught at Matthew Whaley and Jamestown Academy and their families. Her spirit will live in our hearts forever.
Our family is grateful for the love and support of Terri from Hospice Community Care, Newport News, Phyllis, Stephanie and all the amazing caregivers who provided loving care to Boots when it was needed.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later time. Online stories may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
