Jacqueline Moody McSherry, 92, of Toano, VA, passed away on November 19, 2022. A native of Toano, Jacqueline was born June 8, 1930 to Rosser and Mildred (Taylor) Moody. She grew up in a house built by her grandfather, R.K. Taylor and was within a short walk or bicycle ride from her grandparents, extended family, and her beloved Toano High School. Though she didn’t have a car while in high school, Jacqueline was in seventh heaven when her grandmother, Nannie Richardson Taylor, let her chauffeur her around town in the big DeSoto.
Following her high school graduation in 1947, Jacqueline began her freshman year at Farmville State Teachers College. In June of 1951, she earned her degree in Business Education with a minor in English. Later that year, she began working for the school system of Dinwiddie County, teaching all the commercial subjects and Sophomore English. She also assisted with girls’ athletics and served as a Senior Sponsor.
On August 25, 1952, Jacqueline married Curtis H. McSherry of Norge at Olive Branch Christian Church in Toano. Curt’s first assignment brought them to Boston, MA, where their first child, John, was born. As a young southern girl living in Boston, she was asked to repeat what she’d said so many times that she finally – and politely – began to say, “Sorry, you should have heard it the first time.”
In 1956, they returned to the Northern VA area where they bought their first home and had their second child, Michael. During the following years, they had three more children – Nancy, Ann, and Thomas. ‘Jackie’ was fortunate to be a stay-at- home mom, remaining busy with many activities through the church, school, and community.
Curt’s next assignment sent the family to Lancaster, CA, and the Mojave Desert from 1960 to 1962. They returned to Fairfax, VA for a short time before being sent to Taipei, Taiwan in 1969. The family then settled back in Fairfax in 1971, where Jackie continued to raise the children. She always found time to help countless individuals who needed a meal, a place to stay, or an understanding ear. She worked for an Ophthalmologist after the children had grown, until finally she and Curt returned “home” to Toano in November of 1994.
Jackie and her husband Curt actively served churches everywhere they went. They both were instrumental in planting new churches in areas where a church was needed. In 2006, they stepped up again to help out at a new church called LifePointe Christian Church. They intended to serve as members of the launch team for a few months but they never left! Though they loved their hymns and other traditions that would not be a normal part of LifePointe, there was something they loved even more, and that was seeing young people, couples, and families, come to know Jesus. Jackie served in various ministries at LifePointe, including the nursery, serving as a greeter, LifeGroup host, and more. Jackie loved to open her home to others and share homemade food and her legendary stories.
A life well lived, she loved traveling around the USA with Curt, biking, sewing, gardening, decorating, refinishing furniture, and spending time with her grandchildren. Recently, she enjoyed sharing precious memories of her hometown with longtime neighbor and friend, Jack Wray of the Toano Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband of more than 70 years, Curtis H. McSherry; children, John W. McSherry (Cindy), Michael C. McSherry (Liz), Nancy M. Pruitt (Tom), Ann M. Chambers (Paul), and Thomas R. McSherry (Patty); grandchildren, Patrick M. McSherry (Nadine), Erin M. McSherry (Montree), Jacqueline P. Estep (Eric), Kevin T. McSherry, Amanda P. Thomas (David), J.T. Pruitt (Ginger), Louis E. McSherry, and Curtis W. McSherry; great-grandchildren, Colton, Samuel, Scott, Caralena, Joey, Abigail, Zachary, Miles, John, Barrett, Lyra, Ezekiel, Iris, Emery, and Logan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to LifePointe Christian Church Children’s Ministries.
A service will be held at 12:00pm on Monday, November 28, 2022 at LifePointe Christian Church, 8841 Richmond Rd, Toano, VA 23168. Interment will take place at Olive Branch Christian Church Cemetery.
