Dr. James Walker Carty died August 24, 2013 at his home in Williamsburg, VA. Jim was born in Frederick, MD, on November 6, 1940, the son of the late James Walker Carty, Sr. and Janice Archer Carty of Fredrick, MD. Survivors include his wife Jane; son, James W. Carty III and his wife Beth; daughter, Laura Carty Bowers and her husband, Robert; grandchildren, Matthew Carty, Madeleine Carty, Katherine Bowers, and Robert Joseph Bowers Jr.; sister, Anne and her husband, William K. Rogers; and many nephews and nieces whom he loved dearly.
Jim was graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1962, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1966. He was an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore for two years, before moving to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to finish his residency. After completing a fellowship in Nephrology in Chapel Hill, Jim entered the United States Navy where he served a tour in Vietnam on the hospital ship USS Sanctuary and a year at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. After the Navy, Jim joined a small practice of Internal Medicine physicians, Medical Center Physicians, which grew in NDC Medical Center and, later Norfolk Diagnostic Clinic. He served as president of that group for many years. In 1988, Jim was elected to the board of Frederick Brick Works in Frederick, MD. A year later, he became its president. He was elected Chairman in 2011 and continued until his death.
In 2007 Jim and his wife Jane moved from Virginia Beach, VA to Williamsburg, VA, a move Jim wished he had made years earlier. He felt that Williamsburg welcomed him graciously and was very comfortable in the historic town. Jim served on the board of the Williamsburg Symphonia and recently became a member of St. Bede Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 28, from 6-8 PM at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 29, at 11 AM at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd., Williamsburg. Interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim’s memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605 or to www.lls.org/waystohelp/donate/donateonline.
