James Runkle "Butch" Durrette, Jr., 61, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia, after battling cancer. Born on October 12, 1963, in Richmond, Virginia, Butch lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to family and friends.
Throughout his career, Butch worked as a pipe and utilities construction superintendent for many years. His skill was evident in every project he managed. Whether working, building, or lending a hand to those in need, Butch’s work ethic and generosity left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Butch was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lori Durrette; his mother, Betty Durrette; his son, Greg Eskridge and wife Aileen; his daughter, Meredith Lay and husband Clark; and three cherished grandsons: Wyatt, Hollis, and Fynn. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever treasure their memories with him.
He was preceded in death by his father, James R. “Jim” Durrette Sr.; his sister, Debbie Green Potter; and his brother-in-law, Elton Green
Affectionately known as Butch to all who loved him, he was the heart of every gathering—a loving husband, a fun Grandpa, and a loyal friend. He never met a stranger and had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel at home wherever he traveled. Adventures with Lori were frequent highlights of his life; together they explored new places and shared countless joyful moments. Casinos often called to him, as well, and he was no stranger to the winning sounds of slot machines.
Butch’s interests reflected his vibrant spirit: he was a Freemason for 30 years, he was a member of Varina Lodge No. 272 in Varina, Virginia. He loved traveling to new destinations, trying his luck at the slots, tackling building projects with skillful hands, and most importantly, spending quality time with his family and his faithful dog, Chuck. If you needed something built or simply needed someone by your side during tough times, Butch was always there, ready with open arms and an open heart. A true gentleman through and through, he gave selflessly without hesitation.
A Visitation and Reception honoring Butch will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 5 PM to 6 PM, at Nelsen Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life from 6 PM to 8 PM. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose kindness and spirit touched so many lives.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Heritage Humane Society in Williamsburg, Virginia.
May the memory of Butch bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of the love he so freely gave.
