

Jim Joseph, a resident of the Richmond Hill Court neighborhood in Williamsburg, VA, passed away on October 21, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in 1935 in Niagara Falls, New York, to James and Helen Joseph, Jim was the eldest of four siblings. He graduated from Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY, where he met his future wife, the late Marjorie Castle Joseph. They later moved to Syracuse, New York where they raised his two children, Lynn Joseph and Jim Joseph, before making Williamsburg their home.
Jim was instrumental in establishing the Richmond Hill Homeowners Association, serving several terms as president as well as in various board and committee positions through 2021. He was a charter member of the Neighborhood Council of Williamsburg, established in 2001. His tireless dedication to the community was recognized in 2022 when he became the inaugural recipient of the City of Williamsburg’s Mace Bearer’s Award, honoring his “lasting positive impact on the City of Williamsburg…beyond expectations."
From 2007 to 2012, Jim served on the City of Williamsburg Planning Commission, helping to guide the city’s growth and development. He was also an active member of the Cedar Grove Historical Society, reflecting his commitment to preserving local history.
Professionally, Jim was a widely respected authority in the field of industrial liquid filtration, primarily metalworking coolants. He established Joseph Marketing, offering consulting services to major metalworking and automotive manufacturers. He was a frequent contributor to trade publications, including International Filtration News and authored the book Coolant/Metalworking Fluids Filtration, most recently releasing its third edition, Technology Update. As an inventor, Jim developed advanced cross-flow filtration systems and invented the Cross Flow Filter, which extends the life and improves efficiency in industrial applications.
Jim is survived by his two children, Lynn Joseph and Jim Joseph (married to Christopher Warns); his two grandchildren, Alicia Joseph (married to Adam Navarro) and JP Joseph; and his one great-grandchild, Noah Navarro.
A visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, located at 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188, on October 23, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The funeral service will take place at the same venue on October 24, 2025, starting at 11:00 am. A reception will follow the service.
