Jim received devoted care from Sarah, his wife of 50 years, to the very end as he endured the effects of dementia. He is preceded in death by his father, Junior R. Kittle and mother, Doris Lorraine Kittle (Goodwin).
Born in Clarksburg, WV on August 12, 1952 he spent most of his childhood and adult life in Pasadena, Maryland where he and Sarah met in 7th grade, dated in college, then married in 1974 at Lakeshore Baptist Church. Together they raised 3 amazing children, Erik, Jaime and Chadd near the banks of the Magothy River.
After graduating from Northeast High, Jim achieved the feat of being the first in his family to attend college, receiving a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Baltimore. This set him up for a successful 41-year tenure as a computer analyst with the U.S. Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Baltimore, Maryland.
Jim’s dedication to his career paled in comparison to the devotion he showed to his beloved family and his church community.
As a young father, Jim coached baseball and softball and he made time for his children to enjoy camping, boating and crabbing. As the children grew into talented student athletes, he scheduled his beltway commute and work hours in such a way that he could be present for all their after school athletic events from lacrosse games and track meets, to soccer tournaments.
Amidst the busy weeks, Jim and Sarah found solace with their Lakeshore Baptist Church community where Jim served faithfully in many capacities including Deacon, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He was also involved with the youth group and participated in mission trips.
After retirement and a move to Williamsburg VA to be closer to grandchildren, Jim brought along a piece of Maryland with him in the form of a lifelong passion for Baltimore’s Orioles and Ravens teams and all the hats, shirts, and stadium souvenirs to prove it. His second church home became Smith Memorial Baptist Church, where he promptly joined the choir, and had been a member since 2017.
Jim always loved music, as evidenced by his extensive and meticulously organized collection of vinyl records, cassette tapes, and CDs. He had a smooth tenor voice, played guitar, and would sneak song lyrics into many conversations. He will be remembered as the master of delivering unexpected puns and his play on words could instantly coax a smile to a face. In his last years, he was an ice cream connoisseur, a restorer of bikes and toys for children, and most of all cherished family gatherings where he was certain to pray over the meal before the first bite was taken.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah and their children, Erik Robert Kittle and his wife Carol; Dr. Jaime Raye Reid and her husband Jessie; and Chadd James Kittle. He will be especially missed as “Papa” to his six grandchildren: Evelyn, Catherine, Andrew, Silas, Weston, and Blaise. Jim is also survived by his sister, Pamela Rae Jenkins and husband Mark; and his brother, David Eugene Kittle; as well as nieces, and nephews.
