James Byard Massengill, M.D. February 19, 1938 – January 14, 2017 Jim was born the son of Helmine (Endres) and Fulton Massengill, M.D. in Orange, New Jersey, in 1938. In high school, he attended Newark Academy and graduated from the Hotchkiss school. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his medical degree from St. Louis University. Following his internship at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, New Jersey, Jim spent two years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in Albany, Georgia. Next came a residency in orthopedic surgery at Strong Memorial in Rochester, New York. He then trained in hand surgery in New York City. His practice was North Jersey Hand Surgery, with offices in Denville, Madison and Springfield, New Jersey. He served as President of the Morris Co. Medical Society from 1985-1988. He was also a member of the Army/Navy Club in Washington, DC, Ford’s Colony Country Club and PI Delta Epsilon, Cornell. Throughout his life, Jim enjoyed working with his hands, both inside his profession and outside in his personal life. In addition to building many beautiful model airplanes, he was also a pilot and the builder of a Glasair III, an experimental aircraft. Jim attended the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine and became an accomplished furniture craftsman. He was also a master gardener and volunteer gardener for Colonial Williamsburg. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ned (Helen Lind), and his son Ned. He is survived by his wife, Sue; children, Susan (Charlie), Sarah (Marc), Adrienne (Christian), Samantha (Brian); stepdaughter, Katie; stepson, Jamie; grandchildren, Erin, Corinne, Madison, Oliver and Brian; great-grandchildren Annabella and Chase; and step-grandchildren Scott, Andrew and Hailey. He also leaves behind his beloved Winchester “Winnie” Massengill, a beautiful Labradoodle.
