James Fredrick Wharton

Jimmy owned and operated Acklam Drafting where, for over 41 years, he designed the structural steel frameworks for scores of large private and public buildings throughout the Mid-Atlantic States. He loved to tell a good joke and loved real English football (i.e. soccer), which he played growing up in England and in the Virginia Beach “over-30s,” “over-40s,” and “over 50s” leagues. Jimmy also coached and supported youth soccer for many years. Later in life, Jimmy enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Broad Bay Point Greens and Colonial Heritage Men’s Golf Associations. He was proud of the hole-in-one he carded three years ago at Colonial Heritage.

Jimmy was most proud of his family, all of whom he loved and supported unconditionally. He was always a true friend and a true gentleman.

Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret A. Wharton, daughter, Karen Bourdon and husband Eddie, grandchildren, Kendall M. Bourdon and Wesley E. Bourdon, two sisters Doris Brodrick and Brenda Conlin, and a host of nieces and nephews in Virginia and England. He is preceded in death by his son, Paul M. Wharton, and brother, Brian Wharton.

A memorial celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse, 6520 Arthur Hills Dr., Williamsburg, VA.
