He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 28, 1935 and was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia G. Barnes in 1992, as well as nine brothers and sisters.
Joseph graduated from Norview High School and the U.S. Naval Air station Apprentice School in Norfolk.
From 1953 to 1971, he served in the USMCR in the 4th Marine Air Wing. Joseph was then employed by the Department of the Army in Ft. Eustis, Virginia, USATSCH and USAALS from 1958 to 1991.
Joseph was incredibly dedicated to his three children. He was known as “Papa Joe” and was a devoted husband and loving dad and grandfather. A faithful friend and neighbor, he was always known for a witty comeback and the gift of the “Barnes mouth.” He could talk to anyone. Joseph was also a devout Christian.
He was such a tough and strong person, with his oncologist even calling him “Super Man.” Tough as nails, and one of a kind!
