Joseph Meyers

Joe was always a, “Diamond in the Rough.” He was big, muscular, and strong in appearance but so gentle, sweet, and caring on the inside. Never a harsh or unkind word was ever said to those whom he loved or to mere acquaintances. He was born February 10, 1929.

He was the quintessential husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He adored his wife, Edie, with whom he always acted as though he was still on his honeymoon. Among his greatest pleasures was hearing from his children, Ronni (husband, Mike) and Shira (husband, Shlomo) and his grandchildren, Stephen, Valerie, Richard, Reuven, (wife, Zehavit), Jacob, Rivkie,(husband, Moishe), and Naftali, by Facetime, phone, or email. Videos of great-grandson, Chaim, were always a delight. Visits were infrequent, because of distance but when they did get together, nothing compared to the joys he felt. When asked what he loved best and cared about the most, he would say, "Family, family, family!"

Joe served his country well, as a proud member of the army, during the Korean War. He returned to the states, to get his Master’s Degree, from Columbia University. He then courted and married his wife, Edie, whom he had met at a children’s camp. And they said that summer romances never last!

In New Rochelle, NY, Joe spent 35 years teaching physical and health education. He coached tennis, football, basketball, and gymnastics, among other sports. In 1985, he was honored as, “Outstanding Coach of the Year,” by his fellow tennis coaches.

In 1988, Joe retired to Williamsburg and was a member of Colonial Capitol Kiwanis, for about 15 years, volunteering to usher football and basketball games, continuing his interest in competitive sports. He was, also, a valued member of Temple Beth El where he appreciated being part of a warm and welcoming congregation.

Joe loved living in Kingsmill where he played golf and tennis, with friends and family. Joe won many tennis tournaments, including Senior Doubles, for age 65 and over, in 1994. He especially enjoyed his participation in the Oddlots golf group. Being outstanding in sports all his life, in his 1st year playing golf, he had a Hole-in-One!

Joe had fond memories of growing up with his brothers, Stanley and Bob, his deceased brother, Harry, and his departed parents, Fanny and Jack. He was like a big brother to dear cousins, Ina, Arthur, and Cynthia.

Much love to hospice nurses, Laura and Megan and a super job by the staff of York Convalescent Center.

This was a life well lived, never to be forgotten.

A funeral service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA on Wednesday, May 4 at 2:00 PM. Interment to follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park, 130 King William Dr., Williamsburg, Va. A reception will take place at the home of Edie Meyers, 120 Holman Rd., in Kingsmill, following the interment. Shiva (Service and Visiting) will be held from 7:00-9:00 PM.
