

Joyce Phillips, longtime resident of Ashland, VA, and recently of Hampton, VA, passed away on November 22, 2015 at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Phillips; father, Bradford Carter; mother, Lizzie Hicks Carter; and great-granddaughter, Aurora Elizabeth Baez-Phillips.
Joyce was an active member in the Independence Christian Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering for many the activities that serviced her community, the sick and the lonely. She enjoyed delivering food with the Meals on Wheels program. In her spare time she enjoyed reading various books, romance and mysteries were some of her favorites.
She was a wife and devoted mother and good friend to all who knew her; you could say that she never met a stranger.
Joyce leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Carter Phillips; daughter-in-law, Terri Phillips; grandson, John Carter Phillips; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S Washington Hwy, Ashland, VA, on Friday, November 27 from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 28 at the Independence Christian Church, 14023 Independence Rd, Ashland, VA, at 2PM. Friends will be invited to say a final goodbye one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Phillips will be laid to rest, following the service in the church cemetery.
