June Joan Mathews

She was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 14, 1931 and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Theodore S. Mathews Sr. COL (Ret, USAF); her parents, Peter and Anastasia Slawuta; and sisters, Olga and Stella.

June was a member of Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church in Williamsburg, Virginia as well as St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church in Jacksonville, Florida. Family, Faith and knitting were her passions. She was very happy and proud of her four children and six grandchildren. The family pets always made her smile (Whisper, Misty 1 and 2, BC, Nellie, Athena and Bear).

She is survived by her sons, Theodore S. Mathews, Jr. (Patti L. Roskill) and Stephen P. Mathews (Rebecca L. Walters); daughters, Catherine A. Girard (Wayne A. Schmidt) and Carol A. Burroughs (Charles C. Burroughs); and grandchildren, Stephen P. Mathews, Jr., Anastasia L. Mathews, Joseph T. Girard, Gabrielle G. Girard, Peter N. Burroughs and Dena N. Burroughs.

A visitation for June will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, followed by a service at 12:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be gifted to Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church and/or St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church.
