Sue, I am hurting for you and know what you are going through. My husband died November 8, 2014. Know I will be praying for your comfort.

It deeply saddened me when I discovered Coach Marty Dickerson had passed. If I could I would thank him for the lessons on life! I appreciate the tough love, even though I knew he was NOT necessarily a mean man:-) He called me into the office a time or two, about grades...I did not fair well then, but, now I hold a Masters degree in Education. I have him to thank for that. He was a motivator! Even when I did not realize it, he was motivating me. He groomed me to be a motivator as well! It was so very difficult to watch my teammates at the University of Maryland Cole Field House, but so gratifying to see them win it all. Once he scheduled a scrimmage game at Spingarn HS. Home of Hall of Famer and NBA great Elgin "Rabbit" Baylor. We had his nephew Frank "Butch" Baylor on our roster. He said to me, "Bobby can you lead us there?" I said, "I think so." He said, "And oh, by the way, you're starting!" "Uh, OKAY, Coach D", I said. But, that is how he was. We were a family, he molded us that way. We wanted to do EVERYTHING for him to be proud of us. We all had such a great admiration for the man. We were hard on each other, we pushed each other to be the best! That is what a great leader and mentor he was. When Eric Butler (our point guard) and I both arrived at Blair from Carroll HS, it was after Coach Gene Doane's departure. It was also Coach Dickerson's first year at Blair HS. He was so charismatic. Coach Doane had left quite a mark on the Maryland sports scene. I for one, along with probably quite a few others wondered how he would fill Doane's shoes. Well, he showed us all by winning it all in his very first season. He came in and we worked our tails OFF. At the very beginning he scheduled the toughest opponents he could find. How he did this, I do not know. Apparently coach had done his research and asked around a bit. He could play too. Ask the bigs, he would demonstrate a jump hook on occasion. I see some of my other teammates have already checked in. Kevin and Marcus it was great seeing you guys' remarks. Hopefully, others will join in. All my best to his wife, sons, family and friends. I will continue to feel blessed with overwhelming joy at knowing this great man!!

The Cummins Family (John, Judie, John Jr. and Bob, formerly of Bethesda, are so sorry for Marty's passing.  He provided the boys with great leadership and support at Whitman as the boys moved on in life to college and beyond. Marty left this world far too young and he will be remembered in our thoughts and prayers.

I was very fortunate to have had Mr. Dickerson as my first math teacher at Whitman freshman year. He was one of those teachers that you learned a lot from only because he was so personable. I was fortunate to run into him a few times at the Giant by WJ years after I had graduated. He remembered me and remembered that I was going to UMCP.  He always asked how I was enjoying college life. He just knew his students so well. Mr. Dickerson, you were one of a kind. You certainly will be missed. My heart goes out to your family for I know what a loss this is for them. Coach Dickerson coached and shaped the man I am today. I played on the March 10,1980 Blair State Championship team, which is also my birthday. Coach has made this day even more special for me!Thank you for the teachings amd memories. RIP Coach!

I had the pleasure to play for Coach Dickerson, Montgomery Blair 1979 State Championship Team. I am saddened by his passing. He was a True Mentor,Coach and Teacher. Coach imparted a lot of wisdom to us. He did this by selflessly sharing his lifes stories, good and bad with us his players.
  Coach Dickerson and I spent many a day in his office and off the court talking about life. I owe much gratitude to coach Marty. RIP

We were all deeply saddened by the news of Coach Dickersons's passing.  He will always be a great man and role model and inspiration for all of us on the Whitman Varsity basketball team of 1981-82. I was privileged to teach with Marty for 29 years at Whitman and to have coached with him for 8 years.  The success that I had as a coach was largely due to him--he taught me how to coach and he taught me a lot about the game of basketball.  He was a great teacher, a great colleague and a great friend.  He was loyal to a fault and I always knew that he had my back.  Sue, Beau, and Brian--I am so sorry for your loss, Marty was a great guy.  Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers--the world is a little less bright without Marty in it.

Our hearts and prayers are with everyone today!

Marty Dickerson was a true teacher in all senses of the word. His passion for learning and competing was evident in everything he did and stood for. For those of us who were lucky enough to have him as a teacher, coach, or mentor certainly understand and cherish the lasting legacy this man left on all of us. I cannot thank him enough for what he taught me about life through competition. As great of a coach and mentor he was, his family was always his priority. My thought and prayers go out to the entire Dickerson family and may coach RIP.

Coach D took me under his wing when I was a little kid. I first met him at Western Junior High, he was hang'n out in the hallway, did not know who he was and we started talking. We hit it off, two years later he gave me a chance to start at point guard after being the last one off the bench during JV season. I was his teacher aide during my senior year and he was the one who busted me on the last day of school for throwing eggs in the parking lot (Even though I never got to throw one darn egg). I will truly miss coach and all he taught me. Thanks for being a part of my life.

I only knew Marty for the few years that we worked together at the Golden Horseshoe, but I greatly admired him and consider him a true friend. I will miss him, and regret not being able to make his memorial service because I am working at "The Shoe" on Saturday.

Marty was a good friend of mine in college, UCA ,in Conway. We were three gym rats, Marty, Tom Flynt, and me. We played basketball whenever and wherever we could find a gym open. Sadly I had not seen Marty since college and Tom past away a few years ago.. Marty, you and Tom hold a spot open for me, we will try to get the old team back together. Marty, the success you had in coaching doesn't surprise me, you could see way back then, you were a natural leader. Thanks for the memories my friend.

I can't adequately express in words how much Marty's friendship means to me.  Our families have shared so many good times together over the years.  From sharing a recipe, working a crossword, engaging in a deep philosophical discussion, Marty did it all and made it fun. Mr D was a great teacher and coach. He was tough but fair and asked no more of you than he gave.  He also knew how to get the most out of you as a student and  player.

Marty took our son Brian under his wing as basketball coach at Walt Whitman High School and helped develop and guide him.  We and Brian will be forever grateful.  Marty was an educator and coach in the very best sense of those words.

Marty was "Grandpa Marty" to my family!  Beau and Christa are two of our very best friends and we have been visiting Sue & Marty for the past several years.  He was one of the kindest, sweetest men I know!  One of my most recent and special memories was this past July when I brought my two boys to visit for a day.  Marty was out teaching my 8 year old son, Morris, how to play basketball and giving him pointers.  He was enthusiastic and excited to teach my son something new.  Marty was sincere and genuine!  He was loved by us all, and I can't imagine life without him now.  Today, Morris prayed that you are enjoying life in heaven, and that we would not be sad because we will one day see you again!  We love you Marty!  You will be missed dearly.

Mr. Dickerson was my math teacher at Sherwood. He made learning fun, and I really enjoyed his class. So sorry to hear of his passing. Prayers to his family.

I am so sorry to hear this.  Marty was my math teacher at Sherwood High School in the 70' s and he coached my son's 4 years of football at Walt Whitman HS in the late 90' s.  He was a wonderful teacher and coach. He will be missed.

My high school tennis coach definitely had a gift. He got a bunch of teenagers to believe in ourselves - and we went out and became Champions on the courts! Though I hadn't seen Mr. Dickerson in over 30 years, he was a big part of making me a better person.  My condolences go out to his family.

Marty was the most respected person I've ever been around. I grew up through high school and college being at the Dickerson's household constantly. He was my coach, teacher, and mentor. If someone was half the man he was, they would be a great man. Marty had the highest ethics, morals, and truly cared about people's well-being. A great leader with a passion to help others achieve success. He was an amazing father, husband, teacher, coach, and positive influence. Marty has touched thousands of lives and will be missed by every one of them.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Dickerson's passing.  He was one of my favorite teachers, one I have always remembered. I was just remembering fun memories in Geometry class and sharing stories at our 35 high school reunion last month. I remember he had a quote above the clock in our math class from Vince Lombardi, I can't remember the exact one, but it more than likely should be this one as it truly reflects my memory of Mr. Dickerson, “The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”  Many hugs to the Dickerson family during this difficult time. Coach Dickerson was a truly influential educator.  I first remember him as our JV Basketball coach at Sherwood High School in 1976.  He will be fondly remembered.  Thoughts and prayers for his family.

My condolences go out to the Dickerson family. Mr. Dickerson was  my favorite teacher at Whitman. He went above and beyond what was required of a teacher and I will never forget the amount of deduction he put into his work. I aspire to be the kind of teacher he was. He will be truly missed.

I had Mr. Dickerson for Algebra 2 in 10th grade at Walt Whitman High School.  He was by far my favorite math teacher.  He commanded the classroom in a way that made you really want to learn.  He explained things in ways others could not.  He will be truly missed.

Marty had a unique gift. He instilled confidence in others by his own confidence in himself and whatever he was teaching. Marty was a Hall of Fame family member. Always there in a time of need. He taught me post moves in his driveway and I'll never forget the honorable man he is, was, and will always be. Proud he was my uncle.

I remember meeting him first during Maplewood little league football and although I wasn't coached by him, I could tell he was a great coach by his presence alone. I also remember him as a solid math teacher and he was always willing to take the extra time to help you figure out and learn the material. R.I.P Coach Dickerson.

Marty was one of my favorite teachers and head football coach whom i still think about often.  Seemed like an all around good man.  I personally did not play varsity basketball after 2 yrs JV for one of main reasons when he stepped down as coach. I especially liked his dry sense of humor and the way he would look at you / expressions when he knew you were goofing off.  Condolences to his family and friends. His memories will live on forever..

As one of his former Math students I remember his class fondly (and I wasn't a Math person!!)!!  He really was such a dedicated and compassionate teacher and I wish there were more teachers out there like him!  My thoughts and prayers are are with his family during this difficult time.

Marty was named after my father, another Marty Dickerson, his uncle.  Had he lived to read the words written here about him he would have been so proud of the kind of life he lived, as I am. Our hearts go out to Susan, Beau, Christa, Brian, David and Caitlin Rose.

I never played for Coach Dickerson, but he was instrumental in my life for getting me through and to like algebra my freshman year in high school.  I use his techniques to this day; his teachings go well beyond the classroom.  Tough love in his classroom went a long way.  You will be missed, Mr. Dickerson!

I was completely devastated on hearing the news of Marty's passing.  Marty was the first person I met when I began teaching at Whitman as I was thrown into his classroom 1st period to teach AP Calculus BC.  He became my mentor and friend almost immediately.  The advice he gave me as a teacher, wife, and parent was invaluable and I wish I could speak to him again.  It's unfair that you couldn't fully enjoy your golden years, Marty, but you touched so many lives while here.  Rest in peace my friend...you are my inspiration to be the best teacher I can be.

Coach Dickerson was the type of teacher/coach you will never forget.  He commanded performance and respect, all while having a great sense of humor.  Some of his quotes still live on in our memories as we laugh about our high school days.  He was a true influence on so many kids at Whitman.  RIP Coach...

Mr. Dickerson was an excellent teacher.  He commanded the classroom and would infuse humor where appropriate.  I'll never forget when a student had a seizure in our math class.  Mr. Dickerson was calm and acted quickly.  He told students what to do while he was attending to the student suffering the seizure.  His grace under pressure and leadership in that moment stuck with me.  I will always think of him fondly and my thoughts go out to his family.

I played just one year of basketball for Coach D in 1989, but I cannot overstate my admiration or appreciation for this great man and the positive impact he had on my life to come.  I know that's true for thousands of students and players who were blessed to share time with him.  What an incredible life, and legacy, that has ended too soon.  I am so sorry for your loss.

I remember having you as a math teacher during my junior year at WWHS. You were a very good, no-nonsense teacher, and I really respected that. I count you as an influence in my pursuit of math and engineering studies, which has ultimately led to my career in Silicon Valley working for tech giants like Intel and Apple. RIP, Mr. Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson was my math teacher at Whitman in 1993. He was a passionate teacher who truly cared about his students in a way that transcended everything he did. My condolences go out to his family.

Marty/Coach was an incredible influence on my life. My success in athletics was shaped by all the coaches I had at WWHS, but nobody challenged me like Marty. He was truly a great man/teacher/coach. God bless Coach and his family. I will certainly never forget him.

I have thought often about coach dickerson in the years since I played for him back at Walt Whitman from 91-94 & those memories always bring a smile to my face. Having a family of my own now I appreciate and am even more grateful for the time, effort, and sacrifice he and his family made for all of us. Thank you Coach Dickerson. We have known Marty and Sue only for a short time but you immediately sensed Marty's love for his family, teaching, coaching, students and athletes. Our sympathy for Sue and the family and regrets that we didn't meet him sooner.

Mr. Dickerson was always happy to stay with me after school to help me understand math, regardless of if he had practice, meetings, or anything else to do. He always made me know he believed in me and I should believe in myself, too. As a teacher now myself, I hope I can impart so many of the same lessons to my students that Mr. Dickerson taught me.

I had Mr. Dickerson for math at Whitman a number of years ago. He was one of the teachers who really cared about his students and tried his best to give everyone an opportunity to do well. I remember running into him when I was moving into an apartment years ago, about eight years after I had him as a teacher. He recognized and remembered me before I was able to recognize him. I was amazed that he was able to remember me given the number of students he had taught over the years. He was a good teacher and a kind person. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

I wasn't a student of Mr. Dickerson's, but I was often gabbing with students in his class before the bell and he would often kindly and humorously kick me out.  Years later, he and my father met and were friendly as they walked their respective dogs around the neighborhood.  Rest in peace, Mr. Dickerson.  You were wonderful.

Mr. Dickerson was one of my favorite, most fun teachers at Whitman. He will be missed.
