On May 16, 2025, the world lost a little of its color, warmth, and sparkle with the passing of Mary Jo Evans. She was an extraordinary personality and a force of nature. A woman who was many things to many people: a wife, mother, friend, or God help you, an adversary.
Born on November 15, 1946, Mary Jo was never one to blend into the background. She was born in Norfolk, VA to Mary and Stanley Hulvey and was the oldest of four siblings. From a young age, she had a gift for making people laugh, drawing others in, and turning ordinary moments into something unforgettable. She had a rare ability to light up a room — with her spirit, charm, and a deep, generous love for life and the people in it.
Mary Jo was the person you could count on to lift the mood, to speak from the heart, and to remind you that life is meant to be lived fully. Her stories were legendary, her hugs unmatched, and her ability to connect with anyone — from lifelong friends to perfect strangers — was a gift to all who knew her.
She leaves behind a world significantly less entertaining but infinitely better for having known her. Survived by Lynn (husband), Robert (son), Megan (daughter), Mike (brother), Sharon (sister), and their families, including countless friends and loved ones. Preceded in death by Stanley (father), Mary (mother), and Ellen Sue (sister).
A celebration of Mary Jo’s life is being planned, and details will be shared with friends and family in the days to come. It will be a time to gather, remember, and share the stories and laughter that she gave us so freely.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to honor Mary Jo by embracing life a little more boldly, loving a little more freely, and sharing a story — just as she always did. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.NelsenWilliamsburg.com.
