She was born on April 27, 1932 to Florence and Charles Roome of Union, New Jersey. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Albert "Bud" Voorhess of Williamsburg, her sister-in-law, Dr. Mary L. Voorhess of Williamsburg, her niece, Lisa M. Rivolta (Joan Meissen) of Chandler, Arizona and her nephew John J. Rivolta III (Nikki) of Williston, Vermont.
Marylyn graduated from the New York Institute of Dietetics and worked at several hospitals in New Jersey before she went to work for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in their employee feeding operations, where she met, and married, Albert Voorhess who was her "Boss!" They soon left New Jersey Bell and moved to State College, PA where they both worked at Penn State University for a number of years. They worked at several other colleges and universities before they changed businesses and worked for food distribution companies selling food to hotels, hospitals, colleges, etc.
They moved to Newtown, Connecticut where Marylyn took a job as office manager for a Dentist, where she remained for almost 20 years. Marylyn and Bud loved to travel and did a lot of it during these years. They liked to cruise, with Holland American Lines being their ships of choice, but did cruise on other lines too. Their first cruise was in 1979 and they took almost one a year, with sometimes two, until 2017 when they took the last one. Marylyn and Bud visited Colonial Williamsburg on their honeymoon and Marylyn said it would be a great place to live. In 1991 they bought a townhouse in Williamsburg and moved in on August 16th and have lived there since then.
In Williamsburg Marylyn was very active, along with Bud, at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church in all kinds of activities - Usher, Greeter, officer of their Fellowship Adult Sunday School Class, member of the Olive Casey United Methodist Women's Circle, both an employee and volunteer of the Respite Care operation at the church, and other activities. She also worked for the Welcome Wagon program both in Connecticut and Williamsburg, as well as the Elderhostel Programs both in Williamsburg and Charlottesville.
Memorial Services will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 4, 2019. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Inurnment at Williamsburg Memorial Park after the Memorial Service will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ASPCA, the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
