She was preceded in death by her husband, William Garwood. She is survived by her brother, Dane Yeatts; her sister, Sandra Prichard and Sandra's husband, Johnny; her niece, Jackie Prichard; and her nephew, Sean Prichard.
Penny was born in Newport News, Virginia on August 12, 1953. She attended Hampton City Schools and graduated from Hampton High School in 1971. She was employed as an administrative secretary for Hampton City Schools from 1972 until her retirement in 2012.
Penny's great love was her work with dogs, especially poodles. She took great pride in training poodles, and her dogs earned titles from multiple venues of American Kennel Club confirmation and performance events. Penny was a long-time member of Merrimac Dog Training Club and held a position on the board for 26 years. She was also president of Tidelands Poodle Club of Virginia for many years. Penny and some of her dogs were members of Caring Canines and visited local nursing homes. She successfully bred a small number of dogs that are still competing in dog sports today.
Penny's family would like to recognize several of Penny's long-time friends who remained loyal, devoted, and generous to her in her time of greatest need: Johnnie Noles of Gloucester; Alex Davis of Ashland; Sherry Bryant of Chesapeake; and Candy Stephens of Pensacola, Florida. The family would also like to thank the staff of English Meadows Williamsburg Campus for their loving care during Penny's brief stay.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, October 16 at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd., Newport News.
