Phyllis Dorothy McKinney Garner of Williamsburg, Virginia, formerly a resident of Pensacola, Florida for more than 50 years, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 in Williamsburg. Phyllis was born to Hester and Daniel McKinney of Brighton, Massachusetts on August 5, 1935. Her sons James (DeDe) and Tom (Renée), her brother Art (Pat), as well as grandsons Alex and Nicolas survive Phyllis. Phyllis was proceeded in death by her husband of 55 years, John Hilton Garner and by her brother Dan (Marion).
Phyllis retired after a long career as a registered nurse, having returned to school in her late-30s and graduating summa cum laude. In her retirement, Phyllis enjoyed travelling with her husband John, reading, and crocheting. Her true love throughout her life in Pensacola, however, was surf fishing for pompano from area beaches.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 9 at 6 pm at the Nelsen Funeral Home Chapel in Williamsburg, Virginia. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery with her husband John.
