Ray was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Cingale of Briano, Italy; his mother, Ernestine Lombardi of Hackensack, New Jersey; and his brother, Vincent Cingale of Clifton, New Jersey. Ray was born in Paterson, New Jersey.
Ray began teaching in 1963 at Hackensack Middle School in New Jersey, where he taught History and Social Studies for three years. During his time as a teacher, his advanced History students entered his name in to a “Good Guy Award” contest with the New York Station and he won a t-shirt along with the award for that week. The school and his students were very excited that he had won this well deserved award. Ray also went on to be the Assistant Principal for 26 years and the Principal for a year before retiring in 1993. Ray was beloved by the students and their families, along with the middle school staff and their child study team.
Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961 and proudly served until 1967, with two years of service at Fort Eustis and fell in love with the Williamsburg area. He was a communications officer and wrote newspaper articles. Ray met many good friends during his time in the Army and spoke of these years fondly. Raymond enjoyed traveling all over the world, but some of his favorite places to visit were the United States National Parks from the east to west, and Angela’s family in Italy, Belgium, Spain, Germany and other parts of Europe.
Ray is survived by his wife, Angela Caruso Cingale; his son, Stephen (Sara) Cingale, his daughter, Patrice Livingston; his step-sons, Sal (Barbara) Caruso and John (Ana) Caruso; and his grandchildren, Anna, Jaxine, Nick, Jake, and Anthony.
Ray was beloved by family, friends, and all who had met him. He liked to put a smile on people's faces.
The family wishes to thank Sentara Hospice, Dr. J. Majdic and Dr. Zhao for all their care and support for Raymond and his family.
A Visitation will be held Thursday, September 11, from 6-8:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg with a Celebration of Life on Friday, September 12, at 12:00 PM.
