Richard Emms Bain, 89, of Williamsburg, died August 2, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born in Crozet, VA on May 4, 1932, the son of the late Edward H. Bain, Sr. and Katherine K. Bain.
Dick graduated from Belmont Abbey College after serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Azores during the Korean War (1951-1955). He received Master’s Degrees from Florida State University and the University of Minnesota in Political Science and Public Administration.
His calling in life was to improve peoples’ lives through service in local government. He started his career in the U.S. Agency for International Development in Djakarta, Indonesia. After serving overseas, he was the County Administrator in Goochland, Prince George, York and Stafford Counties in Virginia.
He satisfied his entrepreneurial dream by owning and operating Quick Trucks, a small business in Ashland, VA.
He was a faithful Catholic, actively engaged in the Knights of Columbus and Pro-Life efforts and he loved his family. He is fondly remembered by his neighbors in Old Quaker Estates and Brookdale of Williamsburg.
Dick is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Helen Klockgether, his brothers J. Kirk, Thomas H., Henry F., Norman A. and sister Elizabeth L. Bain. He is survived by his brothers Daniel C., Edward H. Jr., George W. and Frank N. Bain; his three children, Margaret (Meg) Hinders (Larry), Katherine (Kay) Mangan (Mike) and E. Hugh Bain (Keitha). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His family will receive friends Friday, August 6 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. His Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 7 at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 104 Norge Lane, Williamsburg, VA at 10:00 am. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S. Randolph St., Richmond, VA at 12:30 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Society for Human Life (vshl.org) and Bethlehem Monastery of Poor Clares, 5500 Holly Fork Rd., Barhamsville, VA (poor-clares.org).
