

Robert Williams Hefner, 1936-2015, died April 4, 2015 at his home in Williamsburg, VA, after a prolonged struggle with kidney failure and heart disease. Affectionately known as Bob, he was born and raised in Williamson, WV and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in accounting. He served in the U.S. Army, 1958-1960, and earned a Graduate Degree from the Rutgers School of Banking.
Bob started his career in sales with Burrough’s Corporation. Shortly, he determined he was not cut out for sales. He joined the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in the U.S. Treasury Department as a National Bank Examiner. He was a field examiner in Washington, D.C., the Examiner-in-Charge of the Charlotte, NC sub-regional office. He achieved the coveted title of Senior National Bank Examiner, Chief Examiner, in the headquarters office for Consumer Compliance, Head to the Special Supervision Division in Chicago with responsibility for rehabilitating more than two hundred and fifty banks that experienced difficulties in the downturn on the 1980s and finished his career as Examiner-in-Charge of one of the largest banks in the mid-west. He retired from the OCC in 1999. After retirement, Bob worked as a consultant most notably helping convert the banking system of Macedonia from a communist system to capitalism. Bob also helped major financial institutions comply with money laundering laws. His work took him far and wide, traveling to many interesting places and meeting many lovely people with whom he kept in touch.
Bob was predeceased by his son, John Edward Hefner; his sister, Rebecca Jane Grimmett; and his parents, Herbert Valentine Hefner and Thelma Gertrude Williams Hefner.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie Whitacre Hefner; son, Robert (Bill) Hefner and Jolene; four granddaughters, Krystal, Lauren, Sarah and Virginia Lee (Valee); sister, Betty (Charles) Sullivan; nieces, Erin Sullivan and Laura (Chris) Riegel, Karen Grimmett; and nephew, Stephen Grimmett.
Visitation will be held for family and friends at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, on Wednesday, April 8 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. Services will begin at 11:30 AM. Interment and graveside services will take place 2:00 PM on Friday, April 10 at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, 140 Light Road, Winchester, VA 22603.
