During his remarkable 84 years, Bob left an indelible mark on every life he touched. Whether you were fortunate enough to be a family member, friend, colleague, or student, Bob’s intellect, humor, and seemingly boundless energy left an indelible mark on every life he touched.
He was a loyal, loving big brother (and occasional tormentor) to his sisters, Susan and Kim.
Sarah, his wife and companion for 67 years, was the light of his life. From Akron, Ohio, to Wilmington, Delaware, to Carefree, Arizona, to Williamsburg, Virginia (with a few stops in between), they were inseparable. Their partnership will always serve as an ideal example of love and commitment.
He was a devoted father to his two children, Matthew and Brooke, and a loving father-in-law to their spouses, Betsy and Joe, whom he cared for as if they were his own. And when it came to his grandkids, Patrick, Ethan, Jack, and Logan, there was no more doting and supportive Grandpa or Pa (and no better driving range coach).
Bob’s professional journey began with his undergraduate degree from TCU and MBA from Wharton. A 40-year career in the corporate world followed, serving as a Senior Vice President with E.I. DuPont de Nemours, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Sharp Healthcare.
But he found his true calling in teaching, first at Arizona State University, then for 12 years as a Professor at the Mason School of Business at William & Mary. In Professor Williams, his students found a tireless advocate and mentor, always willing to share his time and expertise. He was a straightshooter who operated from a foundation of bedrock values and dispensed criticism and praise with fairness, clarity, and an unbending dedication to helping his students, colleagues, and school reach their fullest potential.
He loved a round of golf, a day on a mountain trout stream, and a good meal with family and friends.
When Bob was in the room, that was the room to be in (all you had to do was follow the sound of his laughter).
When he loved you, you knew it without question.
When he was your friend, you had a lifelong companion and defender.
When you needed wisdom or advice, he was your first call.
Bob Williams was a force, a presence, a light, and a very, very good man.
